Hi there,
I'm no guru, but I do use windows 98se.
I've had this problem, and my approach was:
How full is the hard drive?
If it's 70 - 80% full, you may have to offload some data.
Performance can drop off quickly as the drive gets full.
(Unlike magnetic tape, which stores information in a linear stream, hard drives store data in a random fashion, making it increasing difficult for the computer to find all the parts that make up the item you've called up).
Defragment the hard drive.
This is part of the same issue.
Defragging makes the computer organize the disk, "closing up the gaps" if you like, while creating big blocks of contiguous space to write to.
Run antivirus software.
Things seems to creep in "under the radar" no matter how dilligent we are about this!
If the software you have doesn't find anything, you may not be out of the woods yet.
Try AVG, Ad-aware and Spybot which are all good (and free!).
I also use the free online scan at: http://housecall.trendmicro.com
It has ferreted out several things that the others missed.
I hope this may help!
Lee
p.s.
you can also see if anything unusual or unneccesary is "running in the background" by running msconfig from Run... in the Start menu.
[This message was edited by Lee Warren on 18 March 2005 at 09:21 AM.]

[This message was edited by Lee Warren on 18 March 2005 at 09:23 AM.]
