Question for you HTML wizards out there.

Post by Don Poland »

I have a North America map photo that is a .gif file. I am trying to make the map clickable on my webpage, but I obviously lack the talent needed. Can any of you HTML wizards help me out? Here is a pic of the map that I am trying to use. I want to be able to click on any state or province on the map and open a linked page with it. Thanks in advance

Hi Don,
I think you'll want to create image maps which allow you to link to areas that you draw within an image.
I'm running out the door right now, but will be back later, and would be glad to try and help you with that.

That's right, you have to create an IMAGE MAP.
Read about them here: http://webdesign.about.com/cs/imagemaps/a/aabg051899a.htm

It's a tedious process to do it manually. Luckily there are programs that do it for you. They are calle "Image Map Editors". The above link has a link to some popular ones.

It's rather easy to do with an editor.

Dreamweaver has a pretty good image map editor built in. You can draw shapes on the picture and assign URLs to them, and it generates the HTML. I used it on this page - each band member's face will take you to a different page. You can view source of the page to see how it was done.

You can use this program to make image maps. It is fairly easy to use and costs about $10.

Actually, I have found out that the HTML editor I use has image mapping capabilities. I was just to dumb to figure it out until enlightened by some of you here. I use IBM WebSphere.

Stay tuned for more to come!!!!! Image Image
