Question On Norton Anti Virus

Post by Roy Thomson »

I presently use Norton Internet Security 2004
and ready for an update.
I got Norton AntiVirus 2005 (Not Internet Security) on Christmas morn.
Can I download this 2005 software right over
the 2004 keeping in mind that the 2004 is
an expanded version?

Norton is pretty good about prompting you. I know when I've upgraded in the past, Norton detected an older version, said it needed to be uninstalled first, and did it by itself.

Bottom line, try to install the new version, and let Norton take care of the rest.

Yes, I just installed 05 over top of my 04. It is a big improvement too.

PROBLEMS ! !
My 2005 will not overwrite?
The reason prompt states:
"A Norton Internet Security account with
Supervisor access must be logged in to
uninstall this product. Please run from the start menu and log in."
I run the old program menu and can find no procedure to log in.
I have tried to uninstall from the Add/remove programs also and get the same message.
I have tried every window to accomplish a "Log In" and after one hour tried on line customer service. A nightmare !
I am very dissapointed in Norton for not making this much simpler if not possible ,,,
especially when all I want to do is upgrade with their latest version 2005.

All that message is saying is that you must be logged in as an Administrator on your PC. Apparently your normal login is as a normal user.

Thanks again Jim.
I have never had this prompt on previous occasions when deinstalling other programs.
So how do I change my log in status?

You need to log off and log back in as an administrator. Hopefully yours is still set up as "Administrator" with no password. What operating system are you running?

Roy, follow the directions in Bob's link. I don't use Norton Internet Security and didn't realize that it had a separate login.

I have looked at Bob's link and the procedure does not pan out for me. The window they say should present itself
,,,does not show. Very frustrating.
I am left to wonder why Norton would make this so complicated?
I am locked in and can't get out to download
their 2005 edition.
Unbeleivable!

And to make matters worst, they even make it difficult to contact them--I've tried. Their support website is a mess!

Best practice: Never upgrade, prior to updating a program, back-up any necessary files onto removable media; (They might not be compatible with the new version, needing a converter)Then clean the registry with a registry editor (regcleaner for instance, removing any instances or reference to the older program. DO a clean install of all files on the disc. Thence: go to the website and review any available updates available after the printing of your CD,(Help, About, Version..) install them, last import your data to the new version. Registry cleaning is becoming more and more of a necessity as popular software leaves behind more and more useless outdated files that can potentially lead to conflicts within their host programs as well as sometimes in the OS. All the Bayer aspirin in the world wont help...I can honestly say...this has become a regular practice for me...

Roy, when I did the same upgrade you are doing the program looked for the old version and asked if I wanted to have it removed. Said the old version must be removed prior to installing new version. The program that Norton had in the upgrade did everything, just asked for input.

I'm happy for you Hal. That's what I was
hoping for. However,, not that simple fo me.
I'm still wrestling with this and now awaiting pro help. In the meantime I do
have the protection of the existing Internet Security and have no problems and want to keep that way. Image

Sorry - can't offer anything encouraging, which is what you really asked for.

I've used Norton stuff for years, and now have Systemworks 2003 installed, with a current antivirus update subscription in force.

Systemworks does everything. It, along with their firewall application, gives me protection and diagnostic/maintenance utilities I use frequently. But 2003 is getting old, and I'll have to replace it at some point with something newer.

I've been researching the issue on the web, and I've found lots of negative reports out there from people trying to upgrade to the Norton 2005 series of products. So many, in fact, that I've decided to jump ship and go to other products for my antivirus, firewall, and system maintenance needs.

People report significant problems getting Norton-( )-2005 installed and working, and, when they call Norton tech support for help, they get little. I understand they've added a new twist now with their 2005 products now, requiring an annoying "activation" step to get things working.

Bad enough to have to go through that for WinXP periodically (had to do it again a couple of days ago). If I know in advance something else is going that route, I'm outta' there and looking for an alternative.

Too bad. Norton has established itself over the years with a reputation for quality software and support, but these issues are enough to convince me to go elsewhere.

I recently installed Sygate Personal Firewall and Avast! antivirus protection on the laptop I'm setting up for my wife to use. We'll see how those work out. If they don't measure up, there's a BUNCH of others out there, many of which look pretty good.
[This message was edited by Dave Potter on 20 January 2005 at 06:08 AM.]

I use Zone Alarm [free] for firewall and
Avast [also free] for anti-virus.

I've been at the pc since Aug98 and have gone thru just about all those big expensive
protecting programs - McAaffee, Norton, Symantec etc.

As far as I can tell, the free versions work real well for me, and especially because they are pretty much hassle-free.

I'm just fed up with paying out good money for programs where if you look hard enough
you can get the same function for free.

Almost to the day, after I spent $55 for WINZIP, my brother-in-law told me I could have gotten a ZIP program for free - PKWare -
right off the internet. That's all I had to hear. (I even downloaded PKWare to try it out
and found I liked the way it worked better than WINZIP. But today I still use WINZIP -
I payed for it, so I'm gonna use it.

FWIW
