Mac/PC Monitors

Post by Tom Mortensen »

Is there a difference in monitors for Mac and PC or are they interchangeable.
If there are differences, what are they.

No difference,
at least not for my Mac Powerbook. I often connect it to my PC's monitor to have two displays.

Tom,

We had an experience in our shop (at school) once where we fried a MAC monitor (from a G-4) with a PC, to realize later that there is a conversion adapter available for this. But I'm just talking about somewhat older model MAC monitors. Over the years though, most modern MAC stuff is PC friendly, we found, which agrees with Joey's comments.

A Mac won't conect to a VGA (PC) monitor without an adapter, but when you buy a Mac it's included.

The newer brushed metal Apple monitors are all DVI which some PC's have, otherwise you just use an adapter or get a better video card with DVI. The older more plastic-y looking Apple displays are ADC I believe which no PC has and you'd need an adapter for that.

I bought a Mac G4 tower last year with a DVI flat panel monitor. The video card (ATI Radeon 9000 Pro) also has conventional monitor output. I didn't realize until a couple weeks ago that the card would talk to both the conventional and DVI outputs at once. I hooked up my old Princeton 17" PC monitor to the card using the supplied VGA adaptor and now have two working computer screens. Very cool. It's great when working with audio recording software.

I bought a G4 2 years ago...left MacAuthority...stopped at BestBuy and bought a PC monitor...took it home, plugged it in and have been recording and mixing in Pro Tools ever since...without a glitch!I wasn't aware of any adapter, etc.but I will defer to Cal...if he says it's there,it's there.

Heya Steve!

Sometime when you're messin' around with ProTools why doncha record Becky doing "Are You Teasing Me" and email it to me. :-)>

Here's what a Mac looks like with the adapter. I'm not a Mac tech, but I use 3 different Macs on a daily basis and they all connect to generic-type PC monitors like this.
