Java Update?

I received a message/prompt via my taskbar suggesting that I download the following "for optimal security and performance" :

Java 2 Runtime Environment, v1.4.2_06-b03

I don't know if I opted for this update service somewhere down the line or what.

Question is--should I trust this and should I download it?

I got it too. I know that I've installed the Java 2 Runtime Environment v1.4 (the JRE), so I went ahead and allowed it. No ill effects, and the installer was signed by Sun.
