BIAB help

Post by Ken Williams »

I'm running BIAB 9 and Windows XP. When I try to save the song as midi file I get a message that says, this is an invalid file name. Until a few days ago, whatever was typed into the song title box on the main BIAB window, was the name that the file was save to, unless I elected to change it in the save window.
Now, when I press midi or save song as, the name in the save window is NONAME. If I try to save it as NONAME, it will save. If I change it to the actual name of the song, I get the invalid file message. I've been using BIAB for years and I don't think I'm doing anything different than I always have to save a song, or save as midi file.
I tried reinstalling, but it did not fix the problem.

Any suggestions?

Weird, Ken... Did anything change on your computer - did you add/remove/update any other programs or XP itself?

Dave, in the last 6 months, I've had several trojans, brower hijackers, extra icons on the desktop, etc, etc, etc.
I thought I had it all cleared up, but occasionally I will still get several new icons on the desktop. I run spybot, and it takes care of them. Even when I was most infected, BIAB, as well as all other programs, functioned as they should.
I did do a search a few days ago to see what what modified on a specific date. I deleted a few things, but only cookies. If I had deleted a BIAB file somewhat by mistake, wouldn't it have been replaced when I reinstalled? I don't think I deleted any type of windows file because it gives you major warning or simply just won't let you do it.
I have BIAB 9 installed on another computer at home and it works as it should. Sometimes I work on files(songs) in the den area and then save to floppy disk, so I can open them up on the computer in the music room. I can't do this if I can't get the files to save.

Hi Ken,

I was getting the same "invalid file" message when trying to save a song. Try keeping the name of your song to a max of 8 letters or less and see if that works. It did for me.

Jim - I think you're correct - My BIAB V9 did the same thing as you describe - only 8 character max. file names seemed to work. like WARMUPS1. I recently "upgraded" to BIAB v2004 and longer file names are supported, like "Dave's Warm Up".

Thanks guys for the help. I've been saving BIAB box files for years on, don't laugh, windows 95. And I've saved some very long titles with no problem. But it seems with the XP, in certain instances, you must use less than 8 characters. Most of the problems seem to be associated with files that I had transferred from the 95 to the XP via floppy disk. But I think I've about figured out what will work and what won't, with your help of course.

Thanks,
Ken
