I can't get Tommy White's Site !@#$%

Post by Rick Schmidt »

Anybody have any ideas why I can get every website on the internet to come up on my computer but Tommy White's?
I've tried everything. Different browsers, java, no java, tried various sideways access points, etc.
Nothing works. I'm feeling left out.

Someone else (or maybe it was you) posted the same question a while ago. Are you sure you're trying: http://www.tommywhite.com ? Can you "ping tommywhite.com" from DOS? How about "ping 64.182.128.242" ? If that works, your ISP's DNS table hasn't been updated. There's probably a way to access his site from the TCP/IP address, but I don't know how.

Jim:
Was me that had that problem. Couldn't and still can't access Tommy's site if I am using my DSL connection. I can access it if I shut down my DSL and log onto the net with my regular dial-up ISP.
What you say about updating the DNS is more than likely the reason for it.

I just tried the URL above and it worked for me. I'm on DSL so that's not the problem.

Your ISP may be blocking it for whatever reason. Since I can get it and others can too it validates the site's URL.

I can get there just fine.

PS -- that IP address you gave is for www.songpitch.com -- not Tommy White's URL.

If you know the IP, then http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx gets you there.

Maybe Tommy's site is on songpitch. When I ping tommywhite.com, that's the IP address it says it's pinging. When I ping songpitch.com it says it's pinging 64.182.128.227 which is in the same subnet.

I can't get "songpitch" either.....so that now makes 2 sites that I can't get out of the millions I can.....My ISP doesn't have any idea why I can't get em.

BTW....help an ignorant guy out....what's "pinging" mean?

PING, or Packet Internet Grouper, is a section of the ICMP protocol that allows a computer to send packets of data to a remote computer, and clock the time for the response. This can be a great asset for determining whether a Website is accessable, slow, or really fast. You can access ping by clicking Start>Run and type "ping website.ext" to try it out.

Another great extension of the ICMP protocol is traceroute. It will tell you where a slowdown is occurring and the geographical location of your connection. You can access traceroute by clicking Start>Run and typing "tracert website.ext".

PING = Packet Internet Grouper
ICMP = Internet Control Message Protocol

Pinging sends small packets of data to an Internet address to check the connection and it's speed.

While online start a DOS window, and type "ping tommywhite.com" without the quotes and hit return. The text you see when the prompt returns will help you determine the problem, if any, but your ISP should have already had you try that. Try some others that you know you can connect to, like microsoft.com to see what's supposed to happen.

I also really like WS_PING32 from Ipswitch. It allows you to run a Ping, Traceroute, and a DNS lookup without ever dealing with MS-DOS. Sure beats anything that Windows itself has to offer. If you want it, go to ftp://ftp.ipswitch.com/pub/win32/WSPING32.ZIP . It's really good, and it's free.

What is going on here is that songpitch.com also is hosting a number of other web sites. Check their site under web hosting, and you'll see the sites they host including tommywhite.com.
A web server typically has one IP address per card in the server, but may have hundreds of web sites on the same server. Add the complication of a typical web host server farm and you need a score card to tell who is where. Image
For internet utilities, I use nslookup and I use tracert (traceroute in linux speak) sparingly since some systems see tracert as hostile, perhaps as a prelude to a denial of service attack.
