DVD-ROM drive acting up
About a month ago, I put a CD in my DVD-ROM drive, and it had trouble reading it, with an error message stating it was scratched. I tried several other CDs, and it still couldn't read them. Last night, I stuck a brand new DVD in there, and it had trouble reading it. It would take it forever to get the DVD menu up...I kept hearing the typical "grinding" sound of the motor that it makes when a disc is inserted). When my DVD view program finally allowed me the option to play the movie, it would play a minutre or two, then freeze up. I tried starting it over, but I get the same results.
Could the "heads" be dirty, or possibly misaligned? I say heads because I'm used to a tape deck. A DVD ROM may not even have heads??
I keep my computer mini-tower lying on its side (rather than standing straight up), because it's the only way it will fit under my desk. However, I've never had a problem playing discs (DVDs or CDs) for the 4 years I've had it, even with it on its side.
Any ideas on what it could be?
Thanks!

Maybe it's been bought for too long.
