Media Player and WinAmp video problem
Ever since going to the video link in this post: http://steelguitarforum.com/Forum4/HTML/007018.html I get audio but no video from Media Player 9, WinAmp 5.05, and RealOne Player 2.0. I also don't get any video that's embedded in web sites either. QuickTime videos do work, however.
When I tried to play the video link, it did something to determine my connection speed, which for some reason it was never able to do, and I wasn't able to see that video or any since.
The only suggestion I've found from Internet searches was to set Media Player's connection speed manually, but that didn't help. I have reinstalled too, to no avail.
Any suggestions?

Jim, it sounds like your 'default player' changed to something you removed in the cleanup. Do you know the extention of the file you are trying to stream? .wmv, .afx ?
I had that happen not long ago, clicking on a link wouldn't work, but if I opened winamp or media player, and copied the link into 'file, open url' it would play it.
Maybe I'm misunderstanding your problem?
As far as the video on that link, there is a help sight for media player links on yahoo. Maybe something here will help?

Tom, the play window opens, the play bar moves, and I hear audio, but I don't see any video for any extension. The only videos I can see are .mov in Apple's QuickTime player. This is also the case for files on my computer that I used to be able to watch.
Thanks for the link, but I've already tried the tips on that Yahoo page, to no avail.

Ok Jim, understand better now.
Curious, can you play it in media player 2?
'Start, run, mplayer2'
If you can, it could be a directx problem, one of the biggest differences between the 2 windows players. That might tell you if everything in windows is working ok, ruling it down to the media player program.
'dxdiag' will run diagnostics on directx problems, though the results can be pretty confusing.
Otherwise, you might try updating / reinstalling media player. Version 10 is out just recently. Updating maybe would reset whatever went wrong.

Jim, I recently downloaded Winamp 5.05 only to discover I couldn't watch videos either. After some searching I found that my computer was not "advanced" enough for 5.05 and I reinstalled Winamp 3.0. I just clicked on the video link and it played fine. I don't know what you're using for a computer but that could be the problem.

The video doesn't play in mplayer2, dxdiag shows directx to be okay, and I've reinstalled Media Player 9, all with no difference. I don't think Media Player 10 is compatable with Windows 2000. I guess the next step is to uninstall the players and reinstall one at a time to see if that will help.
Larry, my computer is a dual Celeron running at 525 MHz, but the issue is that this used to work on this computer and it's only now that I can't see videos.

Jim, sorry that didn't help. Here's something else I just found on this, and it does make sense to what happened to you.ie, speed settings
Question: WMP7 (or newer) only plays audio from video files played back from the Internet.
Answer: Either turn off Internet Connection Sharing or manually specify the speed of your connection in the WMP Tools:Options:Performance settings. (If WMP is detecting an incorrect line speed, the Windows Media Server may helpfully try to thin out the stream coming into your computer, which means that you'll lose quality and possibly the video. Manually specifying the connection speed will prevent this from happening accidentally.) As a final possibility, you may be missing a codec.
-----------
Not sure how this would effect playing of local files, but still worth checking I suppose.
Also, audio/video files can use a different ip port than audio only. Do you have a proxy server set in media player?
Probably shooting blanks here. Maybe we can get lucky.

I figured it out and am finally back to where I started. The key seems to be whatever Launch.Yahoo did to the video drivers for my LCD monitor.
I uninstalled Media Player 9 and WinAmp. After rebooting, I could see videos but noticed that my monitor was in analog mode instead of digital. (I had both connectors plugged into my video card.) When I switched to digital, I couldn't see the videos, switch back to analog and I could see them again.
Reinstalling the video drivers didn't help, but removing the analog connector and reinstalling did. Now I can only use digital mode, but at least I can see videos again. I reinstalled Media Player 9 and it still works.

Jim, glad you got it.
In my reading on this, I saw where this symptom will happen if your selected monitor isn't the windows default monitor. (2 screen computers would have this problem on one of them with MP9). This is a known bug in MP9.
Sounds like it loaded the LCD monitor driver, but maybe 'plug and play monitor' was set default. Something like that.
Great going on getting it working
