Reducing monitor screen image

Post by Ed Altrichter »

I wanted to enlarge my monitor screen image, so I went to "start", "settings", "control panel", "display", "settings"and "select less" on the "screen area" section. The image did enlarge alright, but now it is too large for some cases and I now want to reduce it to the size it was before. Problem is, when I go to through the same process to "select more" in the screen area section to reduce the image, the place to click on "apply" and "ok" does not show, because of the enlarged image !
Is there an alternate method to reduce the monitor screen image ?

Ed--Even at the lowest resolution (640x480), the 'Display Properties' window *should* fit on the screen - IF it is placed at the correct position.

Presuming you can see the Title Bar at the top of the properties window, put the mouse cursor on it and, while holding the LEFT button down, drag the window so that it is completely visible. --Everett

Everett, thanks for replying, but dragging doesn't create enough clearance.
I'm wondering if there might be some other way of manipulating the image, or some other "trick" to reduce the image, without relying on the afore-mentioned process, because "apply" and "ok" don't show on the screen. So when I put the setting on "more" in the "screen area " section, it just reverts back to "less", and I'm stuck with the unwanted larger image. I can't print anything now either, because the image is enlarged so much that the "ok" box is not visable.

You probably gotta start up windows in Safe mode so it'll revert to standard 640 x 480 vga mode and let you use the the display properties to reset the desktop to 640 x 480 so that when you restart in regular mode the whole desktop will be visible.

Try it. I think to get "Safe Mode" you gotta hold down F8 key at boot.

Since you ARE able to see/move the 'Screen Area' slider, DO THAT. In so doing, the 'Apply' button *should* be activated. If so, then simply hitting the [ENTER] key will execute the change. Simply put, select the desired resolution and hit ENTER.

If that still does not work, we need to get into what monitor and video adapter/drivers you're using. Many monitors and adapters allow adjustment to the screen size and operating frequency. -- Everett

Just a follow-up to Everett's solution... you could also have typed the letter "A" on your keyboard as an alternative to pressing Enter. "A" is set up as the keyboard shortcut for Apply in that case. Many of the commands have keyboard shortcut letters (they are underlined in the button's text)--sometimes it's the first letter of the word, sometimes some obscure letter in the middle of the word. Anyway, just another alternative for future use.
