PC Hangup

With icons on my desktop, I can click in, browse, then exit and try to go on to another icon.
All too often, I get the hourglass when I click on another desktop icon I want to use.
It's like I'm still hung up in SGF, or Ebay or whatever site I visited last.
No amount of waiting will allow the problem to clear.
So I Ctrl, Alt,Delete and reboot.
Often the PC hangs there too, and I shut off the PC at the start/kill button on the CPU. I'm using Win98, IE6, Norton 2004 installed over McAfee (which I never could completely uninstall) and a handful of other antivirus software that I've downloaded.

The install of Norton over McAfee is your culprit !!! When I removed the first virus program, (as you say,not completly) I also took away some DLL's that the operating system needed to function correctly. This created more that a few problems.

I hate to tell you this but,

Really,the only thing you can do to correct this problem (and others that you will begin to notice)is to re-load the operateing system. It has been my finding tho,that you can re-load Win 98 right over the top of the old one. This will keep you from haveing to re-format the hard drive. Now mind you, That you will loose the mail address book,and web-site "Favorites" list.

I had the same problem with a computer.

Thanks Bill,
Difficulty in completely eliminating McAfee seems to be a problem for many.
While watching for advice from the Forum, I discovered that using the F5 (refresh) key is often, though not always useful in breaking the lockup problem.
I'll try your suggestions, thanks again.

Hi David, Thanks for mentioning that F5 button, I'm going to try that next time. I have had the same problem only when I hit con-alt-del, it asked me if it should end task, cancel, or shut down. Sometimes end task does the trick. Larry

Anytime your computer becomes unresponsive, it's waiting for something. Something has requested some information, and unless the program has a timeout setting, it will wait forever. To a computer, time is nothing.

It is probably the conflict between McAfee and Norton. Personally, I wouldn't use Norton if you gave it to me. Norton demands it be in charge of everything. It reminds of HAL in 2001.

Plus, you know you can't use multiple anti-virus programs. It just won't work, and can be disasterous.

Best of luck, and I'd vote for clean install, and just start over.

Les, I've heard pros and cons about both Norton and McAfee.
McAfee was what came with my Gateway.
Then recently I needed to upgrade and thought I'd give Norton a shot.
Had it paid for and then found the problem with eliminating McAfee. GRRRRRRRR.
