Cool Edit 2000 gone - now what? (Suggestions?)
Hi folks.
I've been using Cool Edit 2000 +studio (adding 3 more stereo pairs) for ages to perform two track editing work (mostly tops and tales on final mixes - and light compression - it depends). I never record multitrack recording sessions on computer (I have a nice ADAT/Mackie setup for that), so I don't need some 32+ track multitrack wiz-bang program. Overkill.
I like the way CE2K+studio works well with stereo pairs. I also have Cakewalk Pro Audio v9, which I currently only use for recording/editing MIDI stuff (great for that). I wonder if CPAv9 could handle my needs? I've always felt Cake was a MIDI focused app, so I never really looked into it.
Since CE2K is no longer supported (technology bought by Adobe and then dumped, I guess) and Adobe® Audition is the offered "solution" for a $99 upgrade, what's your opinions/ suggestions?
Thanks in advance! Best, -Dave

If you're on a PC and depending on your budget, I would recommend WaveLab. I use it for mastering and it's a very powerful program. The CD-montage is a brilliant tool and it also supports Redbook CD burning. Its native plugins are quite good, especially the multiband compression, but personally I prefer to use third party plugins.
I know several fulltime studios who do all their work on Mac's but keep a PC just to run WaveLab for mastering and editing purposes. I have no idea why it's never been developed for Mac......

Audacity at Downloads.com.
I haven't tried it, yet, but hey the price is right...

Audacity v1.2 has just been released. Check it out here
and it's open source so it's still free!
[This message was edited by Don Walters on 02 March 2004 at 07:18 AM.]

Thanks everyone. Great suggestions! Wavelab looks awesome! Audacity looks like it's worth a shot - anyone using it for mastering?
I must also say that Adobe® Audition looks like it may perhaps be worth a shot for the "upgrade" bucks ,however other web sites warn that the Cool Edit look and feel may go away with perhaps the next release. After all Audition is really a video editing package, which at this point I don't need.
So for now (as some have suggested), I'll keep using my CE2K+studio on my WinXP/pro machine for non essential mastering work. Depending how rich I feel, I might pop for either Wavelab or Audition. In the mean time Audacity will get a try.
Thanks again. -Dave
[This message was edited by Dave Horch on 02 March 2004 at 08:15 PM.]

I found Audacity about a month ago and have been using it a lot in the past weeks. I really like it, but it doesn't have the muscle that WaveLab does for mastering. WaveLab supports both DirectX and VST plugins, which make it a great choice for mastering. For recording songs from LP's and cassettes and for editing songs for learning parts, Audacity can't be beat. Maybe in the future it will support DirectX plugins at which point I would start using it for mastering.
