Cheap Internet Access
I have a friend that wants to hook up to an internet provider as cheaply as possible. Does anybody have any suggestions?

I didn't realize that the state would make a difference. It is Tennessee. How does Hotmail, Earthlink, Mind Spring, Yahoo, etc. compare in cost and ease of use ot AOL? My friend is a complete computer novice, so he would need something that is real user friendly. I am with AOL, so I could teach him that in a few minutes, but he doesn't like the price.

Netzero,Juno, have a free 10hr per month,or $9.95 per month unlimited,if you are in a region that has their dialup numbers. Netzero also has $14.95 hispeed.Hope this helps some.
George, you can go on line and see if there are numbers listed that are local to him....

Also look into "bundled packages" i.e., combine phone and internet (or cable and internet) I get DSL at $27 per month, seems expensive but by bundling with my local and long distance phone under one plan, I pay a total of $77 a month for internet, unlimited long distance, and local phone service (plus get more bells and whistles on the phone, plus you can talk on phone and use internet at same time). I used to pay about the same for just local and long distance phone, with no internet. If you can't get DSL at your location, you can still bundle unlimited long distance and internet dail-up. I used to have dial-up internet, and my long distance calling plan was cheaper after I included internet.

I pay $1033 a month, but you all benefit from that!
Back to the topic - a lot of folks I know use Juno. It seems to be the most popular low-cost service. I've never heard any complaints about it.

For $1033 a month I hope they're giving you reward certificates that you can eventually redeem for something like free air miles or a new car or perhaps a set of steak knives :>)
[This message was edited by Ray Minich on 10 February 2004 at 09:00 AM.]

Specifically,
I use stowetel.com. $5 a month unlimited access, 1 email account. There is no software or configuration download. There are some instructions on the site but no support. The email is tricky to configure. I've never had a problem with the monthly charge on my card. Typical speed is around 4k a second for downloads. Surf speed around 28 - 33.
