How'd He Do That ??

Post by Paul Graupp »

My grandson was here today and he loves to sit at the computer. I go to word pro, off line and I put letters in colors and his name in colors so he can play with them. Of course he mostly pushes keys but at 20 months, I figure that's OK. But now I see where he has found a smiley face and it's up there with some numbers he punched in but I can't for the life of me find out where he got that smiley face. Any clues or hints would be appreciated ! I hate to think he knows more about this than I do but maybe it's true because he can do it and I can't !!

Paul,
Perhaps you should just consider it a special gift - and stop trying to figure it out! Does kind-of give you goose bumps though doesn't it?

Paul it is real easy my two year old granddaughter showed me. You hold down the shift key and hit the colen/semi colen key, its right next to the "L" in the third row of keys. Then still holding down the shift key hit the number "0" key and release the shift key. you should have something that looks like this. " Image" When done in MS Word it will be a smiley face that you can enlarge or color. Roy

I'd found it before by accident.
In MS Word you can hold the shift key, hit semicolon, then strike the zero key once to produce a smiley face.
Going thru the same procedure, but hitting the 9 key as a final step will produce a not so smiley face.

Paul,
Now hit the ctrl key and hold down the P key for 3 seconds. Remember the P is for Prozac. Should get the little guy back to normal in no time.

Well; he was here yesterday and did it again but this time I was sitting there with him and his hand was on the left side of the keyboard when a second smiley face appeared. I went to Compaq Knowledge Center today and got absolutely nowhere in a hurry. Actually it took about two hours of searching their sites and HP's with no results or contacts.

Still hoping someone on the Forum can give me a clue. I am off line; working in word pro when this happens and he is using the keyboard as only a child can when the smiley face pops up. Maybe it's a magic things only little guys know about

Hopefully, Paul Image Image Image

It's basically the same way you create them here on the Forum. (I disabled smilies in this post, so hopefully you'll see the text.) Type :) and MS Word will automatically change it to a smiley face.

Others that work in Word are :| and :(

Paul, I don't know if this is the answer you're looking for, but it works. Type a capital "J", and then change its font to Wingdings... or change the active font to Wingdings and then type a capital "J". Image

Most people use only the "shift" key to access the uppercase letters and symbols of the font that they are using but most fonts have additional letters and combinations of letters.

On a Mac you can access the regular keyboard, the "shift" keyboard, the "control keyboard", etc.

Also, you can add accents to letters by using combinations of keys. Not sure how to activate them on the Windows platform but I'm sure they are there.

For example on my mac the option key + g key give you the © symbol...joe

Jason !! You the man !!

I still don't know how the boy did it but using Wingdings and a capitol J got me the smiley face just like his. I made up a whole sheet of different colored smilies for him when next he visits and there is a whole new world of symbols I now have thanks to the excellent instructions all of you have given me. I thank each and everyone who has responded to my request for directions in this thread !!

Thanks; Paul Image Image Image
[This message was edited by Paul Graupp on 27 January 2004 at 02:24 PM.]
