disc defrag

Post by Keith DeLong »

I used the maintenance wizard on my PC last night and it went as far as checking the disc for errors, but got hung up on the disc defragment, when I got up this morning there was 0 progress in defragging.
It seems like something was holding up the process. I did close some things on the taskbar, i.e. Quicktime and another photo program, left my McAfee antivirus and firewall on. Any thoughts on this, should I go through Control Alt Delete and end task on everything but Explorer and Systray?

Mine seems to work if I shut down the Anti Virus & Firewall, but if I leave them running, the defragmenting just keeps restarting.......... John

Thanks for the reply--I'll try disabling the firewall and antivirus first, then Plan B--safe mode. I defragged it the other day, but as you say it kept on restarting and only was able to defrag 90%.
Computers are like tube amps, you love them when they're working right and hate them when they're not :.
Thanks again for the help.

Maybe you need to do a disk scan first before the defrag. If you have some bad segments on your hard drive that can hang up defrag. Also, if you have a virus on your computer, it can cause problems with defrag.

Erv, I did a virus scan and that came up clean, also a disc scan and got rid of a lot of files. I did manage a defrag by disabling the antivirus and the firewall, although it took quite a while. It still restartsquite often, and says something has changed on the disc. i was wondering if it's the screen saver coming on that's slowing it down. I think next time I do it I'll try from safe mode.

You should disable your screen saver before defragmenting. Sometimes it's just easier to start in safe mode than it is to stop everything that's running.

That could have been the problem, as it would go along for about 10 minutes then restart. I'll try safe mode next time.
Thanks, everybody Image

Tony's suggestion of defraging in safe mode works great for me......
