HD crashed, check out what I saw
My hard drive got stuck and wouldn't even load "safe mode". Before reformatting I decided to try and copy all files to my D drive. Half way through I got an error saying it could not continue due to file: The file had the following characters: ampersand, i umlaut, heart, club, and double note. Is this an indication of a hack on my computer?

Proberly not.......
What you saw is control codes. Generally the 1st 14 or so characters in the asci code-set would look like this if they were printed.
Beings as your HD croaked, the system read the filenames as best as possible.
I saw a "Maxtor" 160gig drive at "Circuit City" for $49.00 (after rebate) yesterday.
Sorry about your drive going bad. I've had that to happen to me a couple of times too.
