Opinions on SBC Broadband?

Post by Peter Dollard »

I have been seeing all thse ads for $26.95 a month for broadband by SBC. Is it a good deal and what do they use as a home base to run it when you sign on?. I know Yahoo backs it but is it like AOL or is it completely different?. Does each member have their own account and firewall? Peter

I have sbc dsl at the office.i like it, the 26.95 is only good for 1 yr then it will go up to around 49.95.it has a fire wall ,you have stuff like aol has with e-mail names acct.it sure is much faster with downloads ,still get some pop-ups but not that many.and you don't get bumped off.

I have SBC as well. Both broadband and telephone service. My browser is netscape, email yahoo.

Yahoo email gives two sections called email and bulk. They have a filter to decide what is bulk and what is not and give you the ability to change it.

SBC has a long distance plan at $10 a month where that is the charge, period. Here in So Calif the area codes are such that 10 miles away can be long distance.

My internet charges are more than the introductory plan, but I would not change.

One of my greatest pleasures is when someone from AT&T calls me to get me to subscribe to their plan. When I tell them I have SBC there is a long silence at their end followed by a thanks for taking the call, but we can't compete.

Ken,

That is funny...SBC has been a LONG TIME thief in the Chicago area. Right now, TONS of people are switching from SBC to AT&T. I guess just opposite from your situation.

Anyway...That SBC DSL promotions is only good for 1 year. What ever ISP you go with, I would highly recommend a firewall with ANY broadband connection. They are really cheap and they provide you with the best protection. I highly recommend the Zone Alarm personal firewall. Your ISP may tell you they have a firewall, but I don't trust that.

I have seen a TON of offers recently for DSL for 26.95/month. There is a GREAT forum out there for DSL/Cable people. It is http://www.dslreports.com If you are thinking of switching ISP's or thinking of going to high speed internet, then I recommend you read this forum with your future ISP. It is just like the Steel Guitar Forum, but just about ISP's and the service.

Cheers!
Mark

Around here SBC is the local phone company. Is there an advantage to buying DSL service from the phone company? At least the phone compnay can't blame the phone company for poor results.
