I have been running a dual boot system for a few years, using Linux Mandrake as my alternative OS on a different hardrive. I had to reload it lately and I forgot how to get the sound card working. I thought that it was a command something like " sndconfig " typed into the prompt of a shell in /root, but that hasn't worked. Any ideas?

You didn't mention which sound card or which version of Mandrake you're running. But here are some things to try:

[*]Be sure you're logged in as root when running sndconfig, or better yet, use "su sndconfig".
[*]Check the settings in your mixer. Many people report that after running or reinstalling sndconfig the volume is reset to zero.
[*]Be sure sndconfig is actually on your system. Mandrake sometimes does not load it by default. Search your system for "sndconfig". If it's not there, you can load it from the first Mandrake CD.
[*]Be sure your path is correct when typing the command. A search should give you the file's location if it's installed.[/list]

Disclaimer: sndconfig is a Red Hat tool. That's what I run so there may be differences with Mandrake's implementation.
[This message was edited by Jeff Agnew on 15 October 2003 at 04:11 AM.]

Jeff, thanks for your timely reply. I did a search for sndconfig like you suggested and it wasn't loaded on my machine. I upgraded and loaded it and now my sound card works. I am running Mandrake version 9. I should try Red Hat sometime. When I started using Mandrake it was one of the easiest versions of Linux to load, but I am sure that isn't the case anymore. Thanks for the help!
