I finally have a handle on recording my music into my computer and converting it to mp3. Now the problem is uploading. I downloaded a trial version of Crystal FTP Pro. I made the connection to my site account easily. The problem comes when the program is unable to "list file" from the server. I retry then am disconnected by the server for inactivity. Is this problem on my end or the server? When I connect the screen says I am #5(or whatever) of 50 continuous users. Does this tell you anything?

erik,
Take a look at the "settings" of the "SITE" you setup. There are some options you can turn off or on. For example, Passive or FireWall. Try messing with those. Every hosting company is different and sometimes it takes a little wrestling with the FTP application to get it to work right.

Mark, it is my 5mg alotment from my ISP. The directions are <a href=http://localnet.com/support.phtml?topic=5>here.</a> I can never get to step 5. I'm not using their provided FTP program because I didn't download their software. I set up my own ISP connection. They also provide links to FTP software which is how I got the Crystal. I get in no problem on "passive". It's just that the program can not hook up to the server file system. My directory is: members.localnet.com/~ejohn

Have you tried just using Internet Explorer for ftp? In the address bar, type:
ftp://ejohn@olsen.localnet.com
It should prompt you for the password. Once you get in, you can just drag and drop files from a Windows Explorer window into the IE window.

erik,
Well, for security reasons a lot of ISP's won't allow Internet Explorer FTP access. You need the "FrontPage" extensions installed on the server to allow that access. Some ISP's are a little "strict" on that stuff...especially the free ones.

Not true, Mark. I don't have FrontPage Extensions on my Linux server, and I can FTP into it through Internet Explorer. I usually use WS-FTP though, because it's more versatile than the IE window.

I thought that FrontPage Extensions allowed for Browser file management. No?

FrontPage extensions allow you to manage web sites using Microsoft FrontPage. They also give some added functionality to the server which can also be obtained using Java scripts. FTP is a basic internet function and if the site is running an FTP server and it is open to anonymous users you or anybody should be able to download using FTP. Upload requits that you either use FTP comman line or a program like Bob does. I like the WSftp program as well because it makes it easy to navigate through directories, and files on the remote server.
