Strange Lights

Post by Dave Seddon »

I have been given a computer to get me by until I can afford a new one, it works fine but when I switch it off the Number Lock light on the keyboard stays on and the red light on myoptical mouse stays on. All the settings are set to optimum. Has anyone got any ideas why this should happen.
Thanks
Dave.

Dave,

It sounds like the power to the computer is not shut off. The "Num Lock" light on the keyboard will only stay on if there is power being sent to it. Are you sure the computer is not going into "hibernate" mode and not "shut down" mode. In hibernate, there still is power remaining.

Thanks,
Mark

Mark is right. If you punched the "power" button on the front of the computer, chances are it's been set to put your computer mode on "Standby." If you want to totally turn your computer off, go to Start, Shut Down, and choose "Shut Down." Then you can turn your computer off, and for good measure, flip the switch in the back once it says it's ok to turn off.

Even better, put a power strip (w/on-off switch) on the table and plug your monitor and CPU in to it. Then, when you get done, turn off the power bar switch killing all power to the equipment. If you live in an electrical storm prone area like I do it saves on your nerves. Also, unplug the modem when not using it. I've lost 2 in the past 5 years to lightning hitting "near" the power poles down the road from my house. Power strip modem protection didn't help.

Thankyou all for your replies, I checked the power options, which is set to Home/OfficeDesk, by the way I'm using ME,I did try the other setting (Always on)that made no difference. As you say I'll just have to switch off at the plugboard. Strange though isn't it!! Thanks all.
