Leaving a Laptop On

I've heard that while it's okay to leave a desktop computer on all day, there are cooling issues with a laptop.

So far with my laptop, I've been using the hibernation mode a lot. I've been trying to avoid turning the laptop on and of more than once or twice a day. I've noticed that the computer is slightly warm when I return to it.

Someone advised me that a laptop should be shut down if it's not going to be used for an hour or so.

Anybody have an opinion on this?

I only have a laptop and it sits in a port replicator, turned on all day 5 days a week.
On weekends it stays on 24hrs Sat. & Sun.

Constantly on.

No ill effects have been noted and the laptop is over a year old.

I just leave the top up while it's in the dock to let more heat escape. My old laptops were more of a problem so this is probably just an old habit now. I don't use the keyboard or display while docked - I use an external monitor and keyboard.

When docked; it most likely has the vent free correct?
As that is the main thing to do if you do leave it on...just make sure the vent of the fan is not covered....and it will not overheat...

Yeah, I have a ton of Dell Latitudes at work, and I have a bunch of people that just leave them on 24/7. Never had a problem.

I must say, the Dell Latitude laptops are a little on the high price side, but they are really reliable. I have NEVER had an issue with them, and I have roughly 47 of them at my office. Great machines.

I've got something a bit lower on the food chain; a Compaq Presario 2100. So far, for my somewhat routine uses, it's been fine.

I appreciate the comments. So far no one else I've talked to has supported the view that a laptop should be shut down if it's not going to be used for an hour or more.

According to what it says about "hibernation," that technically does shut the thing down; at least that's the terminology used. When I come back after it's been hibernating, I don't notice any heat at all. I was mistaken about that.
