Audio Drivers

Post by Tom Mortensen »

I have been unable to find a driver for PCI Multimedia Audio Device on my Compaq Laptop.
I had a virus and had to completely start over on my laptop.
Installed Windows 98 SE.
Have been to the Compaq/HP website and tried their drivers and support help with no luck.
any ideas?

Intial ideas are:
1. Be more spefic. What model computer, what sound card or chip? How old is the machine?
2. Most computers come with a CD to, at least, restore the machine to the original configuration (as delivered). Do you not have such a CD?
3. Seems like a lot of folks 'start over' as you did, when that really isn't required.

Post some additional info to make it easier to provide help. --Everett

Hi Everett,
I'm using a Compaq Presario 1200XL 110 Laptop.
The system comes with the hard drive partioned to C:and D:
D: contains all of the backup files and restore functions.
The virus had got into both partitions and I was unable to run any restore functions.
I repartitioned my hard drive so that there is only 1 partition C:
I installed Windows 98 SE from a CD that I have that did not come with the Compaq Laptop. I have had to download a couple of drivers from Compaq's website to get the display and other things going.
Everything on the laptop is working now except audio.
How can I find out what sound card is on this thing.
[This message was edited by Tom Mortensen on 29 June 2003 at 09:18 AM.]

[This message was edited by Tom Mortensen on 29 June 2003 at 09:19 AM.]

Tom; Compaq has their own built in Drivers for each specific computer...(as you may of found out)....So go back to the compaq site and download EVERY driver availiable(not just specific ones).....so get every driver availiable for your exact computer.
I know this; as I had to do the exact same thing you did....for our road managers Compaq Presario.
I was having the same problem you were after I partitioned....then I said "ta'hell" with it....and just downloaded every possible driver for that laptop....and the thing has been working like a dream for 8 months now...yeee haa.

Tom-- Visiting the Compaq site and doing a few searches, I got the following:
"If your Presario did not ship with a Quick Restore cd, have your serial number ready and visit www.compaqordercenter.com/freeQR to order the restore software appropriate for your model of Presario.
This free offer only applies to Presario models manufactured after September 2001 that qualify."

The 'Quick restore CD' evidently costs around $11 if you don't qualify. Also, many people complain it "restores" to OBSOLETE versions of some software. (Like MSIE 4.x)

Tom--Further research:
"Presario Notebooks Via WDM Audio Driver for Windows 98/ME
Version: 1.11 (04/14/2001) "

That's about a 9MB download!!!

I got to it by going thru all the crap on the 'support' pages, entering your machine's info.

Thanks for all of your responses.
I finally got the audio going on laptop.
A combination of fiddling with the BIOS and downloading everything possible from Compaq.
(Ricky, you're right...And, that's how they fix late model cars at the dealership now. Just keep putting parts in until one works.)
Everett, your research about VIA Audio is correct and I found two different drivers for that device also.
Again, thanks for your help.
