LATimes Xword

Post by Chip Fossa »

I can't save this puzzle. They tell me my
bowser, er, browser, doesn't have the correct jewels for this operation.

Once again, gang, HHHEEELLLPPPPP!!

Chip,

Hey buddy! Looks like you need "Across Lite" software to get the puzzle. You can download the software from here: http://www.litsoft.com/across/preview.htm That "Across Lite" software is pretty popular for online crossword puzzle players. I am sure you will enjoy it.

Take Care,
Mark

Mark,
I used to have Across Lite, when the NYTimes
Xword puzzles were FREE. They want $10.95
a year now. I ain't payin. If it ain't free,
I ain't buying.

I've already spent [and wasted] a lot of dough on these pcs.

The LATimes is not a bad puzzle at all. I'd say just a tad below the NYTimes. BUT, it is free.

I'll try Across Lite again, and see if it will save the puzzle. The LATimes didn't say you need to have AL to play their puzzle.

Thanks Mark, for the tip.

Mark,
I downloaded Across Lite, but the save still didn't work. LATimes said that the latest versions of MS IE should support the save.
I have the latest MS IE.

Then another screen said,
..."Sorry. It appears that the save of this puzzle was not successful. It may be that your browser does not support certain features required for this save or that your browser is not set to accept cookies..."

How do you go about setting cookies?

I know it's probably in TOOLS/INTERNET OPTIONS, but I'm not sure how to go about it.

Thanks again, Mark.<FONT SIZE=1 COLOR="#8e236b"><p align=CENTER>[This message was edited by CHIP FOSSA on 03 June 2003 at 10:57 PM.]</p></FONT>

Chipper-- You're right, it's under Options.

Click the 'Privacy' tab and move the slider button up/down to adjust the acceptance of cookies. Or, for more detailed control, click the 'Advanced' button on that window to set the GENERAL level of cookie allowance.

To set cookie acceptance for SPECIFIC web sites, click the 'Edit' button on that same window and follow the instructions.

Enjoy the X-puzzles. --Everett

Well Ev,
I went into PRIVACY/EDIT and wrote in the exact address for LATimes Xword, and it still popped up as unsuccessful to save.

The version of IE that I have, is
6.0.2800.1106, and the SETTINGS is at
MEDIUM.

Chipper-- Did you remember to click the 'Allow' button after entering the URL???
Or, maybe, the web page you specified was NOT the page that issued the cookie. Or, maybe, your problem is not caused by cookies.

For the moment, go back to the 'Privacy' settings and move the slider all the way down to where *all* cookies are accepted. Then LOGIN, AGAIN, to the LATimes site and see what happens.

Ev,
Nope. A curious thing, however.

It took absolutely no time at all, not like previuosly, for LATimes to figure if the SAVE would be successful, or not.

Maybe I don't have the latest version of IE.
Although, it seems to me that just lately
I have updated MS IE.

NOT being able to save a Xword, to me, is
extremely vexing. The way it stands now, in my case, is either stay with the puzzle until it's been resolved, or check out and lose all your work.

AAAAAAGGGGGHHHHHh!!!!!!!!!

Thanks anyway, Ev...

Chip, being somewhat of a crossword nut myself, I figured I'd give it a try. Well, I had no trouble at all. I downloaded the puzzle, which took no time cuz it's only 4k, but I needed to download Across Lite to open it. There was a link to it right under the online puzzle.
I am using IE6 medium security, and allow cookies....I just delete them every day. Don't know why it's not working for you.

Thanks Tommy Mc,
I have Flashplayer and Micromedia and Across Lite and medium settings and still can't save the puzzle.

I notice that some of the puzzles are archived. If you want, I can download some and put them in a zip file. Doesn't solve your problem, I know, but will give you some to work on until you figure it out.

Thanks Tommy Mc,
That's a nice offer from you.
Sure. Why not? Send a few. I've done most of the ones right around the 1st click in ARCHIVE, BTW. I have WinZip.

I wonder if even these will work.

Why can't those Xwords simply be saved as an HTML document, like most things that are downloaded from the web?

Thanks again Tommy Mc...

I forgot to mention, and maybe this doesn't matter, but the only puzzles I really like doing on LAXword are the large Sunday ones.

Maybe the daily ones download easier?
