Does anybody know whether there exists any such pick ups for steel, - that through software writes out on the computer screen what´s being played? Preferably tablature, but notes would do, too.
I seem to recall that there was some talk about such a device a few years back.
Would be grateful for any hint.

Over 10 years ago, the IVL company made two such devices; the "SteelRider" and the "SteelGuitorchestra". They both consisted of a special pickup and a rackmount midi interface module. The SteelRider was marketed by Ron Nabors of Little Rock, Arkansas, and the SteelGuitorchestra was marketed by Al Petty of Overton,Texas. The IVL company landed a long-term government contract for making other things and totally quit producing the midi devices. What a loss! With current computer technology,an updated version of this device would be awesome!!

At this time, the best probable solution would be Cakewalk Guitar Studio 2.0. I use it often, however, you enter your notes either by guitar synth (eg, GR-30, Roland), or keyboard, or point and click. There are several ways to play it back. You could also use a drum machine pad to enter notes. Another way is to point to the guitar fretboard and click. The notes are immediately added to the staff and sounded simultaneously.
