Uninstall Shield "?

Post by John Hawkins »

I have a few things that I am trying to delete from my computer ( Windows 98 O/S )such as a game or two that we never use that were installed by one of my sons ( exp: DEER HUNTER") . I also see NORTON SYSTEM 2000 listed in my programs, which I also do not use any longer .As far as I know , these programs are dormant but I still would like to get them completely removed .

When I go to add/remove a window pops up that
say "UNINSTALL SHIELD " . It will not allow me to remove these type programs . If it is too complicated to do , I may not want to attempt it but I would like to know how, anyway .

Could someone give this old computer dummy some help as to how I can get these type programs uninstalled ??? I currently use Norton Anti- Virus 2002 only . I sure do not want to mess around and delete it by mistake.

Many thanks for your help !

I used to write installation programs for our software. UnistallShield is part of the commercial program InstallShield, and is safe to run. It is designed to allow the user to completely and correctly "uninstall" the software, if it is written correctly.

Are you saying that you can't run UninstallShield or that UninstallShield fails to remove the program? Image It's possible that at sometime in the past you deleted part, but not all of the program, as the reason UninstallShield won't run.

If so, the remnants are probably only small entries in the registry and you can not worry about it, unless you are experienced with working with the registry.

BTW, when I installed Norton 2003, it uninstalled 2002 before the installation started.

A program like Norton Systemworks should find those program 'remnants' for you and ask you if you want them removed. It's often available for next to nothing after rebates.

Thanks Jim and Tony for your replys .

Maybe I don't have a problem after all so I think I'll just drop the effort/s and call it a day !

Jim - for your info. the uninstall shield only is displayed after I highlight the item and then click on add/ remove . Right under the display a popup says "cannot find bla- bla-bla file .Uninstall will not continue .

I would not dare attempt to mess around in the registry or this computer would probably become an instant boat anchor here in Lake Livingston .

Thank you both again for your input .
