Winamp vs WMP version 9.0.0.2980

Post by Chip Fossa »

A while back I made the big mistake of downloading the latest version of Windows Media Player; yeah, version 9.0, the one that you CAN NOT remove [who came up with this idea, anyway?].

But to cut to the chase. My main program for playing audio is now my old version of WINAMP.

I forget why, but I think Winamp would play almost everything, where WMP would not.

So I somehow made it so WMP would not automatically pop-up when I would click on the CD player, for instance. Fine. Well almost.

When I click on Winamp now, before it starts up, I get this really annoying warning flag that says..."Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item"...

So, #1 - How can I make the warning flag go away for good? and/or #2, how can I make it so Winamp cuts WMP off at the pass and takes over. I'm having a bit of a problem trying to find out where you can go to enable Winamp as the default audio source.

Thanks all, in advance. This annoyance is like a fly buzzing around your head and you can't seem to swat it.

I would uninstall Winamp and WMP (it at least lets you go back to the original version intalled on your computer). Then get RealOne player. It plays every type of media and you can set it as the default player.

Tony, I also have RealPlayer, too. Use it mostly for Rebel's Steel Licks.

WMP cannot be removed now....The download site states this. WMP is not even located within ADD/REMOVE.

But, then, maybe I'll give RealPlayer another try. Seemed, before, that RP took over everything. I kind of know now how to control some of those things, now.

Thanks Tony..

Don't need Real Player now, Chip. Am changing all the clips over to mp3, so Winamp will handle those.

As for WMP, if you are running Windows 98, you may be able to disable it in the start-up. Click on Start, then Run. In the box, type msconfig then OK. In the box that opens, choose startup tab and see if WMP is listed there. If it is, and has a check mark in the box beside it, uncheck it. That will stop it from running when you startup Windows.

In Winamp, click the little diagram in top left corner. Choose Options from drop down box, then Preferences, then File Types. Click which file types you want to associate with Winamp.

Thanks Graham...
Most helpful. Can't wait for the complete
"licks" revamping. I know it's a monumental task. I know I speak for most everyone here,
and we can't thank you enuff in not only changing the format, but keeping the whole deal up and running.

I just upgraded RealPlayer to RealOnePlayer.

So far, it seems OK, and a bit of a cut over Winamp, and certainly WMP.

Thanks again Tony and Graham.

Later...

Well,
I did install and upgrade RealPlayer
to RealOnePlayer. Seems like all the audio
is clearer and more vibrant than the old Winamp. And it is set to default, and so far it is working real well. Thanks Tony, for the tip.

I also removed Winamp.

Oh yeah, Graham, it also plays the original
Rebel RA files; but a flag did pop up when I tried to play an RA file, and it asked if I wanted to download some special software for those files.

This thread can be closed, Mark, if you so choose.
[This message was edited by CHIP FOSSA on 13 May 2003 at 08:16 PM.]
