How do I go about putting my web site out there

Post by Larry Lenhart »

Just for my own entertainment, I used Front Page and created a simple web site for my musical stuff. I have included simple sound files using the PC recorder that came with my computer and the built in microphone-so the quality isnt that great, but I dont care-I am not interested in spending time to creat good sound files just for my own use. Anyway, my question is, how do I get it on my www so I can show it to a few friends. I was told Geocities will allow you to do that, but has lots of pop ups, which doesnt bother me, but I couldnt find their instructions for doing so. I was also told to contact my internet provider, which is SW Bell and see if they support Microsoft Front Page and will allow me to do that. Any other ideas-I am in the dark ages when it comes to this stuff. Thanks in advance for your help !

Larry,

There are 3 different routes you can take.

1. Take the free route and go with you ISP or GeoCities or another free hosting company (for myself, I find they have TOO many popup adds)
2. Find a hosting company that will host your site. (I use a company called Ready Hosting http://www.readyhosting.com They charge 100/year, that is about $8 per month)

3. Host the site yourself...you are probably not there yet.

So those are your 3 options. I highly recommend option 2.

If you decide to go with a hosting company they do give you support of publishing your website.

Mark

I had good luck using www.netfirms.com for web hosting. It's free if you don't mind their banner ads. The ads arn't bad.

Once you get tired of the ads, you can upgrade, for $60/year. I did that recently.

Hi Larry,
I've been using the free Geocities and Angelfire websites. The pop-ups are a pain, but Angelfire has a new twist on their banner ad. You can design your own banner and an animation for it. Also, you don't NEED to find a host that supports Frontpage. There is usually the option to upload your image and sound files, and just copy and paste the html pages. Here's an example of an Angelfire banner with an animation I made.
