Monitor Problem- Need HELP!!
For anyone that can help me out-
My computer crashed last Thur night.I was outside & left the computer on( NO screensaver)-just a picture of the icons on the desktop with the cloud background.My wife came outside & asked me "why are the clouds on the computer all grey insted of blue"?.I came in & just as she said-grey clouds in the background.I am running Win98
1st edition.I have removed the monitor from the control panel & let the computer "find" the monitor-still the same problem.I tried a differnt monitor & still the same problem.
When i go to a clear area on the desktop & right click to change the monitor settings( i seem to think this is the problem area)as it shows the pixel slider all the way to the left & on 16 colors(i think this is way too low) so i change this setting & the computer then restarts.Same problem-then i go in to double check the settings & they have never changed.It is like any setting i change the monitor to will not take?? Does anyone have any suggestions??..I am able to read text(but it is real "grainey" looking-not smooth like it should be) like on this Forum but you can forget about looking at a picture of anything-a picture is like looking at a negative of it-what a mess..Any tips,hints/suggestions would be much appreciated & THANKS for reading.Ron
[This message was edited by Ron Whitworth on 09 February 2003 at 06:45 PM.]

[This message was edited by Ron Whitworth on 09 February 2003 at 06:47 PM.]

Ron,
Sounds like your video driver is corrupt. Right-Click on "My Computer" and then go to "Properties". Then click the second tab "Device Manager" Find your video card and write down the details. Then go to the manufactures website and look for an updated driver for Win98.
Also, have you added anything new lately? Changed anything?

Hi Mark;
Thanks for your reply..I will try to download a newer version driver.After i find a newer driver,how do i assign it to my video card(to make sure it goes where it is supposed to in my computer)??How do i remove the corrupt driver??
The only thing added or changed was i had to reinstall Win98(same edition & version) to get my Win back to working..But this monitor incident happened,i guess,as my computer had crashed(the messed up monitor).
THANKS for your help Mark..I appreciate it..Ron

Ron,
The driver could be the wrong one (selected by the Windows setup program) or corrupt but it could also be that when you re-installed Windows it changed the settings for the driver. You can check it by right clicking on you main window (click anywhere on your clouds). Select "Properties". Then select
"Settings". You should see one for "Colors" and select at least 256 colors or more.
