Windows 2000

I just bought a new PC-P4.
They had to do a special configuration
to get it to run the software for my
Canon Printer. Now Windows 2000 does not
like my Soundblaster software and won't install properly. My son has the same soundcard and his CD burner will not work with Windows 2000???
Anyone know what's going down here? Do we have to go back to Windows 98?

I might be able to help you with your problem. I need some information from you. What sound card are you using, what CD burner does your son have, and what CD burning software is he using? I just got a new system here with Windows2000 and haven't had any problems so far.

Hi Jimmy:
We are both using SoundBlaster Live!Platinum.
His is a model above mine. I have the SPDIF
connections. He has that and also the Digital Optical lines in and out.
We both also have the sme CD Burner "Nero"
That could be the software name..not sure?

Take it back. The configuration for the printer may have screwed everything else up.

When I replaced my 98 with XP and tried to hook up my printer..it wouldn't work but did give some complicated instructions of how I MIGHT make it work...but advised against it......I took the warning seriously and just bought a new printer.

Thanks for the comments.
The printer works flawlessly and fast.
There is absolutely no evidence of any
conflicts. I will check it out however.
I may be better off to regress to Windows 98.
Although that means more time and ($), it could save a lot of headaches. Maybe??

When you go to upgrade to Windows 2000 and Windows XP, you can put the CD into your tray before the upgrade and there is an option to run a HCL (Hardware Compatibility List) check. This basically probes through the setup of your current OS and tells you if it will work in the upgrade OS. And it will even tell you what drivers you will need to get before the upgrade. After you have your list of items to get, just go to the manufacturers website and download the new drivers onto a floppy disk. When it comes time for the upgrade, it will prompt you for those specific drivers.

My suggestion for these printer/soundcard & CD Burner issues...Find out what type of BIOS you have and then go to that manufacturers website and get the update for the BIOS. BIOS is the "Basic Input/Ouput System" for your PC. With some of these new Operating Systems, it is critical to get the latest BIOS updates and also, you may not be able to use the software that came with your Printer/Soundcard or Burner. You may have to go to the manufacturers website and download the software for your specific OS. I know is sounds like a pain in the you know what, but it will save you the headaches in the long run.

I may be way off base here, but I don't see anywhere where you state what kind of cd burner you have, Roy. If it is internal, then I can offer no help, but if it is a USB cd drive (it connects to your cpu via a USB cable) then you will have problems with Windows2000. I had to get an internal drive to use, as Win2k has a problem recognizing USB ports. Sorry if this is not relevent...

It seems obvious to me that my best option would be to go back to Windows 98.

Roy,

I would urge you to keep moving forward and I think you will enjoy the stability and speed of Windows 2000 and/or XP. I have had NO issue's with these 2 OS's and I implement them at home and on a HUGE network at my job. However, your OS is just like your Anti-Virus. You need to update it with the latest patches if you want it to be reliable. Here is the link for Microsoft's site: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ They are always making updates and security patches for their OS's. They are free to download and they are well worth it.

Aside from the problems outlined above
I really like the 2000 system and am inclined to give it the full benifit of the
doubt.
I have a confirmation from SB support that they will address the issue within the next day or so.
I am going to print this thread off and share all the suggestions, recommendations
etc with Tom my son.
I am very gratefull to the Forum and the expertise we have gathered here.
