Windows xp question..

Post by Mark Krutke »

I've noticed a problem with xp in that it continues to crash while the McAffee virus program is in the computer. After this continually happened, we got tired of xp all together, and wanted to install 2000, but the computer won't let us do that!

It's a HP, 1.2 Ghz, but it doesn't have the recovery disks for xp. Does anyone know how I could get a different OS into this computer, and get xp out?

Mark,

I just went through this issue. My boss purchased a PC with WinXP on it, but at the network I run, I only allow Win2K. In order to load Win2K over Windows XP, I went to http://www.bootdisk.com and downloaded the 4 bootdisks for Windows 2000 and then installed that way. If you put the Windows 2000 CD into the computer it says something like "You have later version on Windows installed and can not go backwards." Then if you try and go to the DOS prompt and do a c: format it won't let you because WinXP does not run in DOS! So, basically, get the boot disks, then fireup the machine with the first disk in the floppy drive and from the boot disk prompts go ahead and say "Format or delete this partition" and start the install for Win2K.

Mark K. Are you sure the MaCaffee is the problem. Does the unit crash without MaC. If Mac is the problem, wouldn't it be easier to change to Nortons. Win XP is a lot better platform than Win 9x even though Win 2000 is a step in the direction of XP. You're probably going to have more grief in loading a different OP system than with what you have now.

You might might want to see if McAfee has an update/patch for your version before reving the os.

Also, if your using a firewall program perhaps it's conflicting with McAfee in some way. XP has a built-in firewall.
[This message was edited by Ron Page on 25 October 2002 at 01:53 PM.]

Apparently the problem now is getting McAffee out of the system, which is a little difficult to do for a novice like myself. In addition, I've had good success with Norton products.

We'll try keeping xp, and getting the patch for McAffee. It upsets me in a way that no recovery disks came with the PC.

Mark K,

What version of McAfee are you using with WinXP? I am using WinXP and McAfee 6.02 and it works great. Just curious to the version you are using.

Mark,
If misery enjoys company, then feel right at home. As I have a 2-3 year old HP Pavilion
with Windows ME; NO WinME recovery CD
came with the PC.

Recovery and Application CDs [3 altogether]
came with the PC, but they are Hewlitt-Packard's CDs, and specific only for this particular PC.

I once took out some program [from ADD/REMOVE] and mistakenly removed some shared MSCV type files. Short of having to
have REFORMATTED the entire PC, I could not re-install those files with the HP cds that
were provided.

Through the generous help and expertise of fellow forumite Everett Cox [Thanks again, Ev], he was able to determine the correct number [4] and exact name of the files and emailed them to me. I then bounced them to a floppy and from there proceeded to reinstall. Things work fine now. But what a pain!

Why would HP do this? They're trying to make these things harder to work on for the average unskilled PC user, so you will probably have to call up their SUPPORT GROUP and PAY-PAY to get the issue resolved. Just my take, IMNSHO.
