Think of them both as tools, then choose the tool that works for the jobs you have to do. If you're going to be doing basic office stuff such as surfing the web, checking email, etc. then either platform will work equally well.
The Macintosh computers have historically had better audio and multimedia software, while Windows computers have traditionally offered more "bang for the buck". There really isn't much difference between the two for the most part. Although you still get much more computing power for your money with a Windows machine, it can be harder to correct problems if any arise.
The one advantage to using a Mac is that viruses are much less common and harder to catch. Either way, be sure you get an antivirus software program and use it.
I use both a PowerBook G3 and a IBM ThinkPad A20. They're both fine computers and both do what I want them to do.
