Hard drive contents question

Post by Mark Krutke »

I've got about 4 gigs unaccounted data in my hard drive. I know what some of it is, but does anyone know where to go to find a display that describes what you have in your hard drive?
I don't have that much storage space (8 gigs)so I'd like to delete things I don't need. Thanks to anyone who can help me.

Mark-- Your question is pretty general and somewhat vague ("unaccounted" but "I know what some of it is") but, if I understand properly, perhaps these free utilities will help: http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html will get you a nice system analyser that, among other things, checks the Windows Registry for installed applications and presents a list of them. Depending on the system data available on the BIOS and other chips, BELARC gives a very good picture of your machine.

will get you a 'disk clean-up' program that allows you to quickly get rid of what are USUALLY useless files. It gives you the ability to do an 'express' clean-up of file caches, temporary folders, history, etc., and other files that are PROBABLY no longer needed. You can also setup 'custom' clean-up jobs for which YOU specify the criteria.

I do NOT advocate simply eliminating file caches, history, temp internet folders, etc. Properly maintained and used, they all serve good purposes and provide useful convenience.

Be very careful when removing files based upon type (extension - what comes after the dot in the file name). It's easy to lose some that you later need. Read the instructions for this (and other) clean-up utilities at least twice.

If you wish, feel free to email me. -Everett

To remove programs that you don't need anymore, use the "Add-Remove Programs" utility in the Control Panel. It can have a big impact if you have games or asset-heavy programs like The Print Shop.
