A Ton Of Temp . Files

Post by John Hawkins »

Mark ,
Now you will find out how really dumb on this computer monster I am . I think I told you that many months ago when I suggested you take over the forum computer section I believe everyone on here is very glad you did. !!

I have a bunch of Temp. files (are they the same as "cookies" ? ) that I want to delete all at once ! I read over a post you did earlier and the sequence you used --I cannot find on my computer .
(ie: your responce to Roger on june 02 2002 .
was "My Documents>Windows>View Files> TempInternet Files . )That path I took as a way to delete all the Temp's all at once .

I am using Window 98 version and when I use the path you set out , I cannot find where Windows follows My Documents .How do I get into the balance of the path you outlined ?

Is there another approach to deleting all these Temp. Files ? I can delete them one at a time but since I have a bunch I would like to get rid of them all at once.

If I take all of them out together ( at once ) will it effect the ones I have in my favorites file ? I would not want to lose anything in there --especially this Forum site , etc , etc ,

Mark --I warned you , early on , that I did not understand a computer to a degree that I can brag about, so please forgive me for some stupid questions here --ok ?

Thanks and I'm glad you are here on the forum and thanks for all the time /s you spend answering someone like me who is about ready to use this monster as a boat anchor !!

Kind regards-- John

I may have posted those instructions. You click Start, then My Documents, then click the up arrow on the above tool bar, then you should see a Windows folder on your screen. Double-click that folder. It should then have a link that says "show all files"(ignore the warning). You should then see all the folders in Windows. One of those will say, "temp internet". Double-click that. That reveals all your temp files with cookies. At the top left of the tool bar mouse over Edit. In the Edit dropdown click "select all". All the files will be highlighted. Then click Delete. It will prompt you with "are you sure". Click it and they all go bye-bye. Next, close that task. Open Explorer and at the top under Tools click Internet Settings. The box will have a Clear History button. Click it and you're done. You will also notice in that box a delete temp files button. Doing this will NOT delete cookies. And cookies are what do the tracking. This is why the best way to get both files and cookies is going through My documents. Hope you can follow this. BTW, i do this sometimes twice a session.

John,

Congrat's on getting through it. Man the forum is great...people beat me to the answer most of the time!

In regards to your question...temp files are different from cookies. temp files are what your computer uses when moving data around and opening up programs and doing things in the background. Basically, your computer does tons of calculations and manipulations of data and needs temporary spots to hold stuff, that is where the temp files come into place. It is said that when you shut Windows down, your operating system will delete the temp files it created during its session, but we all know that Windows doesn't like to shut down all the time (especially Windows 98) so then this is where the accumulation of temp files starts to build. Your Operating System can't delete temp files from previous sessions so they build up and build up. I usually go to the Start menu and go to Search and then select Files or Folders When you get to the dialog box. Make sure the Look In box is selected to the C:\ drive. Then is the Search For box I type *.tmp This will find all the files ending in .tmp on your Hard Drive. Do a CTRL-A and that selects all of them and then go to the File menu and select Delete.

Cookies - These are files that websites put onto your computer. They are handy because your preferences are stored in there. For example the forum...The cookie on the forum remembers the last time you visited so then you can see all the new post's since your last visit. It also holds information like, how you prefer your views for the number of posts. I like the last 10 days, but maybe others like the last 100 days or whatever.

Hope this helps and let me know if you have any more questions!

Mark
