According to b0b, I am the first steeler to actually see the Forum in person. I was over at his place to get some steeling guidance this afternoon (and to have fun jamming!), and before I left I asked if I could see the Forum server. It is a black, Dell PC tucked innocuously into a bedroom closet. Nearby in the same room is a synchronous DSL modem with 2-way connection speed in the mid-700kbps range, activity lights flashing away with steelers reading and posting from across the globe. What an intriguing sight, really!
Many thanks to gentleman b0b for sparing his time and passing along some steel wisdom, for jump-starting me on the B6 tuning, and for giving me a glimpse of the cyberspace home of the world's steelers. Very cool.
Bob, boring stuff and I get along pretty well, actually. I like trains, and have a collection of VHS train tapes which comprise hours and hours of trains going by. Great for railfans, excrutiating for normal people. So seeing an array of der blinkenlights on a modem showing everybody from Santa Rosa to Munich chewing the rag on the Forum is interesing to me. But then, if I had to be around it all the time....
Bob, I have a video of intercity trolleys between Sacramento and nearby points (Oakland, I think). It's from 16mm film from the '50s, I think. No streetcars, unfortunately.
And I'm mostly an armchair railfan, to boot. No model trains, just videos, a rail magazine, and the occastional trip to the tracks to see a train go by....
