illegal operation" returns

Guys, I need your help again, please. Months ago I had a problem where "illegal operations" appeared on the screen, sought your advice, and was rewarded. Now the same nasty message has returned but this time it's locked me out of receiving email (but not from sending email or getting onto the internet).

I've tried to reboot about 10 times. Previously, rebooting worked but does nothing now. The message I get is "fault in module Netscape.exe at 017f

o5oe dbf7. Then "registers" is listed with a bunch of numbers, then "bytes at" wth more info, and finally, "stack dump" with even more numbers. WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN AND WHAT CAN I DO to defeat the enemy? Install the Bill Gates approved version.

Have you added or changed any other software? Sometimes add ons or a virus scan program, etc will cause problems in another application. Some programs also install new versions of some dll's and older programs have problems with the newer versions. I had problems with TurboCad for Windows and after upgrading it wouldn't work and it turned out it had to see a certain version of MFC42.dll which I had to install into it's folder.

There are a lot of possibilities. Along with the fact you may have to reinstall Netscape, with the particular fault you are getting.

If you have Windows Me, you may be able to recover through the restore function. Older versions do not have the recovery function.

Steve, The simplest way to "fix" this is to re-install windows.

What version of Windows are you running??

While in Windows, load your 98 disk into the CD, and run it. Follow the prompts, and you will NOT lose your current settings, and programs.

I had this sorta problem with Delta Force 2.
Everytime it seemed that i was going to complete an advanced level screen, it would go to a "stack dump." re-installing the game was easy, but it had to be done several times. I still don't know what the Problem was. But the game now works and it bores me so I don't play it anymore anyway.

Re-installing Netscape should clear it, too.
But it may not take the first time. As I said before the quickest, simplest way would be to re-install windows.

Thanks, Jack and C. Allen. I did as Jack suggested first and went with Microsoft as my browser and the email now comes through using Outlook Express. What a relief!

One last question, is there any way I can get old my old email that was stored using the Netscape browser? Only messges as of a few days ago are coming through, and I need some of the old ones. When I try to go into get them using Newscape, the "Illegal Operations" guy freezes everything. If there is no other way, I will reload Microsoft 98 and Netscape. Thankfully yours, Steve
