? about changing programs to open files

Post by Mark Krutke »

This problem (probably simple for many of you) may have been posted before. I tried to download a catalog off a site called www.aaasolar.com, and after I downloaded it, it asked what program I wanted to open it with. I tried WordPad, but it couldn't open it, but now when I try to download the catalog again, it uses WordPad again also. Does anyone know how I could change the program used to open this, and what program I would use? I'm just a beginner at this.

You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader version 3 or later to view and/or print the catalog.
Acrobat Acrobat Reader is free from Adobe's web site http://www.adobe.com

Hi Mark

Windows associates certain programs with certain file extensions, i.e. .doc files open with WordPad. Go to Help and search for "associate", then double-click on "associating files with programs". Instructions will be there.

I think, if you install Adobe Acrobat Reader, that the installation will set up that particular association for you. Acrobat files have a .pdf file extension (portable document format).

Something to watch out for, and what I suspect bit you - when you try to open an unknown file type, windows will ask "what program do you want to use to open this file?" When it does this, look for the box next to the line "always use this program for this file type" and make sure it is NOT checked. If it is checked, the file association is made. If it's not, you can try using the program without making the assoociation.

I just took a look at the website - did you download the zip file or the pdf file? If it's the zip file, you'll need the Winzip utility from www.winzip.com to extract the contents. It's a freebie as well.

Hope this is helpful, and good luck.
