I got the navidod virus

Post by Janice Brooks »

Got this Sunday from someone who forwarded me an old post from Bill Newman. I put a new version of McAvey virus skan on this other computer.
I got the printout of how to remove it but I can't seem to get beyond where you change the exe file to com.

Is that the Navidad4.exe file that someone sent me? It was from "Pearson" and I recognized a lot of people in the "To" list. I don't run EXE files that I get in email. Too dangerous.

Email from RJ McNulty confirms that this is indeed the virus. He says it hammered his hard disk.

NEVER run a program you get in email. An EXE file is not just an attachment - it has the potential to wipe out your computer. Windows has no prevention against these kinds of attacks.

According to the McAfee website, if you have the latest scan engine it will remove the Navidad for you. If you don't then you have to do the manual removal. Looking at the manual removal instructions, I can see where you are confused since the instructions are written for someone with some DOS and computer experience.

Maybe you can find someone a little more technical than can follow the manual removal instructions and have them do it for you.

I lost two harddisks a few weeks ago, by a virus, Mcafee didn't recognise it. It destroyed everything,
Now I found a goof free virusprotector through the web, called Aladdin, you can download it through Esafe.com

I use Outlook 2000 for e-mail and the latest updates add real tight security and Outlook will not even show .exe and some other attachments. It will give me an alert message that they were attached but will not even show them as attachments. It seems like overkill but it does work.

I also run Norton Antivirus 2001 which also checks e-mail.

I also have a personal firewall up, and I guess it stops some of the intrusion.

Too bad we have to go to these extremes.

The nature of these viruses and worms is that they propagate via infected users' address books. The sender is unaware. It is not a deliberate, malicious act.
However the infected sender MUST learn about his own system and keep it clean. If you are going to be an active emailer then you must take responsibility for vigilance on your end.
I will not open attachments, even from familiar names, because of this.

Face it--when you receive bulk mailings from friends, how valuable are they?
Usually pretty trivial and forgettable, right?
They get deleted now. It's cold, it's efficient, it's SAFE!

This Navidad virus was known several weeks before XMAS. It even made national news a day or 2 before. I went to my Anti-Virus manufacturer's site and made sure I was protected. Y'all BE CAREFUL!

I take Jon Light's advice. I play it real safe! If I don't recognize, and trust the sender...I TRASH the e-mail! I do the same thing with my regular mail, too. (My common sense is greater than my curiosity.) I even do the same with registered letters and big packages...if I know no one in that zip code, I just never pick the thing up from the post office!

Also, it pays to buy a good anti-virus program like Norton. And remember, you get what you pay for. Free, and "super cheap" anti-virus programs are just a little better than nothing.
[This message was edited by Donny Hinson on 30 December 2000 at 08:56 PM.]

I feel terrible about the trouble that has been caused...as the above post states. .I have narrowed this problem down to the Zing picture storage that I have used for two years.. The addresses on the email are not the problem...it was a hacker that copied them and caused problems for many of my friends..as was stated before..never download an attached exe file .. I dont send that type of file and dont accept them...
Again my appoligies .. and the best of the new year to all...Bill Nauman Las Vegas Nevada
