Scanner "twain error" HELP

I have a HP scanner that won't work as I load the software and the computer says "twain error" I have deleated and reloaded the software and to no avail. Any suggestions?

What version of windows are you running and what type of scanner and interface??

I have a HP4100c scanner (USB Interface) and I had to get a patch from HP (downloadable from their site)in order for it to run under WIN ME.

Thanks Jack for your reply. I had to reformat the computer to get the scanner to work as there were some files missing. Luckily I was able to back up most of my information.
