Audio Compression

Post by Rick Tyson »

For all those who are constantly looking for a better audio file compression program, here is a free high quality program by, Monkeys, that will do the job for ya.
It has ZDTVs 5 star rating.
I have tried it & it works great Image cuts a wave file in half.

But then you need another program or plug in to play that format. I've cut down on the number of programs I have loaded (including removing winamp) as many, such as winamp, "take over" your PC. I don't do much uploading or downloading of audio files so the .wav or MP3 is not a problem for me.

I've never heard of or used this program, but it may be that it's lossless compression. MP3 and ATRAC (the latter is used in MiniDisc players) actually throw away some of the audio information (hence the term "lossy compression") but do so in ways to which the human ear is relatively insensitive. I've read about how they do that, and it's very clever (ATRAC sounds great to me, MP3 sometimes can sound mushy or swishy). But you can also compress a regular WAV or AIFF file (these represent pure, uncompressed digital audio) by about 50% without loss, and it may be that the Monkey software does that.
