Windows media Player?

I have that on my computer and have downloaded Real Player, Real Jukebox and Netzip download and I don't like them as they take over the computer , even when I want Windows Medal Player which came with my computer. A little advice from some of you pros would be appreciated....thanks...al

Al:
Go to Explorer, then Program files and then Windows Media Player. Double click on the executable file to open Media player, then click on view and then "options". In the box that opens, click on the "formats" tab and then select the music types that you want Media player to handle. That should help you solve your problem.
You may also have to open Real Player, click view, then preferences then the "Update" tab and at the bottom, click re-associate files and in the box that opens, uncheck any of the format boxes with a check mark in them, such as mp3 etc.

That is one of the things I dislike about some programs and especially RealPlayer. They try to "take over" your computer and do not give you options when installing. For those that are not "PC techies" if can be a hassle and you will have a lot of stuff setup that you really don't want or need. I have them both on my PC but I have taken the time to go back and reconfigure them the way I want it. e.g. you don't need the "RealTray" in your startup file if you access a RealPlayer file it will automatically start up anyway.

Winamp is another that "takes over" your PC. It is a popular program but it loads a lot of crap that's not necessary, including adding several commands to the right click functions. I installed this program but uninstalled it as I didn't like all the things it automatically did.

I am glad that you posted about Real Player and Winamp. I wondered if that was normal or not.
I agree with you, I don't like them taking over my computer and the way I want to play my music.
However, I an not an expert on computers, so usually just have to take it.
But with guys like you on the Forum, maybe we can beat them at their string along game. Thanks to you both...al

Will Media player play all the clips which are downloadable on various sites? Some of the clips start to download Real Player and I already have it. If I can go without it, I certainly will remove it. It's a little Hitler!.......Which sound clip players are necessary to have???? Thanks Joe

Media player will not play Real Audio files, just as Real Audio will not play .wma or .wmv (Windows Media) files. It will play just about everything else tho', including mp3, au, wav, aiff, etc.
If you can overlook some of the "automatic" things Winamp does, I think, IMHO, it is the best all round program for listening to all the formats available on the net at this time. On my computer, I have Media player set to handle .wav files and mpeg video, Winamp to handle mp3 and Real Audio to handle Real Audio files. This seems to work fine for me. I have Cakewalk set up as my default midi player.
