Enter Network Password" on Startup how to prevent
Recently I had to get help from my internet provider, BELLSOUTH.NET seems my internet connection boot up was stalling after I had entered my pasword to get connected to the internet. I just could not get onto the internet so I had to disconnect 2-3 times before the internet bootup was successful. So I called B.S. and went through 8 Techs and 3 hours of trying to solve the probelms. Now when I turn on my computer I get a dialog box that tells me 'ENTER NETWORK PASSWORD" I either enter my password or hit cancel and the computer will continue to boot up totally in which my full blue desk top with all my icons appears. My question is how do I prevent this password box from appearing when I turn on my computer. I'm not on a network system either. This password box started to appear after Bellsouth re-connected my computer to the internet yesterday. Prior to the problems with the internet this password box never appeared while my desk top started to appear. JIM this is what I did, I'm still getting the dialog password box when the blue screen comes on. I went into, "CLIENT FOR MICROSOFT NETWORK PROPERTIES," and this is what is indicated on the gray dialog property box:
Logon Validation - Log on to Windows Network Domain
(when you log on, your password will be verified on a windowns network domain)
WINDOWS NETWORK DOMAIN
_______________________ (the line represents a blank white box that I guess you must enter a password in or something)
NETWORK LOGON OPTIONS:
____ Windows logs you onto the network, but network drivers are not reconnected until you use them. (this box is not checked)
What does this option mean???
__X___Logon and restore network connections. When you log onto Network windows verifys that each network driver is ready to use. (this box is checked)
So which box should be CHECKED. If I check the other box will the password dialog box go away, will my internet system go nuts again????

Kenneth, like I said, I haven't played with 85 or 98 for a long time. I'm running Windows 2000 which is a lot closer to Windows NT than 95 or 98, so don't take my word for gospel. You're not on a network, so I would think you could uncheck the "Logon and restore network connections" box. I don't think you should have any of those boxes checked.

OK, this is how the password box got onto my desk top. After going through 6 Bellsouth Techs I requested to speake to a supervisor who told me to load my Window 98 CD which came with the computer. I did just that, he then told me to go to the dialog box that has all the adopters, there where about 6-7 of them. He then told me to delete 5 of them which at that time I did. (I forgot which ones but I did rememeber I had TCP/IP and one more left). After I deleted the 5 he had me restart the computer and I went back into where the adopters where located and the 6-7 where back in place. After I told him this he said let's forgot about them for now. After that I was taken on a grand tour of my computer. After he told me things should work fine, he hung up and I restated the computer again and the password box appeared each time I would turn on the computer. I called back and again a tech told me to do this then that then hit this, etc., and I should not have any more password boxes appear. Guess what he was wrong.
So here I am once again and I guess I'll have to live with that pasword box until I call a Compaq Tech which by the way the computer is only 9 months old it's still under warranty.

Ken,
Here's one thing to try:
Go Start > Settings > Control Panel. Once in the control panel, choose the passwords icon. Then choose Change Windows Password. Enter your current password, then leave the new password section blank. You may also try this with Change other passwords. I know this disables the winders login box, but I'm not sure about the network password.

Hi all first try this: Go to start then go to settings then go to control panels. Next click on the network icon then when the Network window opens go beneath all of the tcp/ip stacks and select windows login it might already be (client for Microsoft networks) or (Microsoft family login) no matter which one is selected change it to (windows login) If the login screen still comes up after you restart then you need to do this.
Go to: start then search for files or folders. The files you want to search for are (*.pwl) when your search results finds all (.pwl) files just select them and drag them to the trash.
You must make sure that you know all of your passwords to all of your Internet accounts because when you delete these files all of your stored passwords will be deleted!
After dragging all passwords to the trash you must then restart your computer. When the login screen comes up just cancel the window and you will no longer have the login screen come up.
But if you still have the login window just cancel it one more time and that should get rid of it permanently.

PROBLEM SOLVED:
Just got off the phone with a Compaq tech, and this is what he made me do:
Go into, CONTROL PANEL, then into, NETWORK SETTINGS. The dialog box indicated, NETWORK CONFIGURATIONS, (then to), THE FOLLOWING NETWORK COMPONENTS ARE INSTALLED - (he then told me to)- REMOVE - "CLIENT FOR MICROSOFT"
Restart the computer and presto no more NETWORK PASSWORD dialog box. He said I wasn't on a Network so I really don't have a need for NETWORK settings.
Again THANKS A MILLION to all that have tried to help me I got an education from all you guys.
Hey, why don't some of you guys relocate to southeast Florida and get a job as a BELLSOUTH INTERNET tech/Rep. or better yet a supervisor with this Internet provider.
