Fender For Dummies

Post by Bob Hickish »

Just come off a grate weekend of
pick'n at a local festival here in the NW
5 gigs in three days -- Although -
That's not what I wanted to talk about !

Last evening I left the power cord to my
Fender Steel King at the last gig of the day ,
Today we are setting up for the first one ! and
NO Power cord !!! It was only a 30 minute round
trip to were I left it , so all was not lost .

Here is my point !

I'm the Dummy for forgetting the cable !!!
BUT !! If Fender would use a regular three
prong plug in this unit ! I could have just used
an extension cord and went to work no problem
OR panic .

If Jody Carver sees this post ! Please Tell Fender
to protect us Dummy Steel players from ourselves !

Ok I feel better now !!

Bob - I haven't unplugged the power cord from the back of my Steel King since I got it. From the back of the amp I drop it down behind the back panel of the amp and then out to be plugged in to the power strip on stage. Once I'm done playing, the cord is coiled up and stored in the back of the amp, secured under the Velcro straps that there for that purpose. No need to ever unplug it from the back of the amp.

Bob - correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the Steel King use the standard removable power cord now used on all amps, computers, etc.? As I recall, those are required for export sales into Europe. I'm not sure what you mean by "regular 3 prong plug" - because if it's the kind I'm talking about, it IS the regular three prong plug and as common as a roll of duct tape on a gig.

I seem to have 20 of them in my garage. I've always kept at least a couple in my gig box - if I don't need one, someone else will. Everyone I know usually carries one or two.

Yeah there's no reason to ever unplug the cord from the amp because the way the amp is built, you don't have to. Hello

It would help to use a plastic tie~down that is mounted to the side of the cabinet with just one screw. That way, even if you unplug it; you can't remove it from the amp. cabinet. It's often a standard item on many brands of amps., just like the straps that secure speaker or the reverb~tank connections.

All very good points !

I guess I just see it from my window !
after the 9th hour of a busy day , just
about anything can happen ! and you
don't always get good help when packing
up & loading .

The power cord does unplug !

If ! it should get unplugged by me
or any help you may get from others &
get left behind ! not every hardware store
or farmer has one ! BUT !
The other cords ! they do have them .

Just My opinion Gang ! This is not the
big city out here so we're all ways looking
for a bailing wire fix for every thing .

This won't happen to this picker again !

One of the "spare parts" that I carry in my SUV is a computer type power cord. I've got several items that use that type of power cord so carrying a spare makes sense.

Jack (Sysop)
I intend to do just that !
This is the first Amp that I have
used that will allow this to happen !
so I will make it Babba proof !

Thanks all for your input .

"not every hardware store
or farmer has one !"

I can't believe that a hardware store doesn't stock those. They are as common as light bulbs. Anyway, those cords are required on every new amp that is made for both US and export markets. Can't be sold "new" in Europe with a removable cord, and for good reason - safety.

I've serviced dozens of vintage amps that have had rotted grommets and stiff, abraded insulation - and a few that have gotten so bad they have shorted at the chassis hole.

Maybe it's just me, but I'd kinda prefer remembering to bring a cord to electrocution.

I found an adapter which will allow me to plug in a regular extension cord into the amp/keyboard/etc. Although I rarely forget the cable I work with knuckleheads who do. It is handy to have this extra for them. PS: I also carry an extra drum key;...guess why?

Jack
Clued me in on the extra cord in his SUV the time I forgot my cord for my rack system.
Since then I carry one in my SUV and I've had to use it once since then.

I guess I'm not the only one that ever
got on the short end ! or one hot dog short
of a picnic !
What I was trying to get to here is - Wouldn't
it be nice ! IF you could just go
in the work shop and grab a drop cord and plug
in -- no special special cord or
adapter needed . Its been
said here , how common the cords are & I will
agree with that . This never happens when
you in an area were someone will have one
of the new type power cords at hand . when this
happened to me ! We were on a farm & the next
spread over was a cattle ranch !! plenty drop cords
but not a power cord to be had . I know not all
of us play in areas like this , but out here , that's
just about all there is - I will have an extra cord
from now on , but it would be nice , not having more stuff to haul .

One cord short of a gig
