Post by Larry Behm »

I am playing a fair Sat. I was told I would have 4 twins available, I am going to stack them 2 on each side and plug them all in. Pictures to come I hope. I can't wait.

Should be a killer tone. Do not forget to try and eliminate the ground loop hum! It will be awful with 4 amps chained together and single coil pickups!!!

If you turn them up past 7, and stand in front of them when you play, you'll be sterile for the next 24-72 hours.
Woo hoo!
Twins are killer amps.

Bring a fuzz-tone, the twins have a wonderful grind.

The bass player plays through a 1,000 watt amp head and an Ampeg box with 8 10's. This will less than 400 watts and 8 12's. They think the steel is to loud with just one Webb, this ought to knock em out.

I plugged into 3 or 4 Nashville 400's some years ago, expecting a really big sound, but; it was actually less of a sound and I just unplugged and returned to my own (2)-Amps. I don't know what I might have done wrong, but; it was disappointing to me!

Big John - maybe the speakers weren't all wired in the same phase relationship with each other. If some of them are out of phase, they will work against each other and the whole thing will sound very thin. The key is that all speakers must be wired with the same polarity. I have often run more than one amp - if the speaker phases are not correct, it is really noticable.

Most speakers have + and - phase indicators on the terminals, but not always, and I've seen some labeled incorrectly. One can check the speaker phase by quickly touching a low voltage battery terminals (I like a weak 9-volt) against the speaker terminals. If the positive battery terminal is hooked up to the positive speaker terminal, the speaker should push out. Just do it long enough to see how it moves.

I used to see Johnny Winter and Rick Derringer play together fairly often back in the early 70s - usually the Boston Tea Party on Landsdowne St. across from Fenway Park in Boston. They generally each had a pyramid of 3 blackface Twin Reverbs - 1 on top of 2. Believe me, they were plenty loud, those things were cranked.

I saw Marty Stuart use the same configuration of SF (MV) Twins.

What a sound!

Well it did not work out as planned, we went on an hour late, played to 20 people and the stage was very small. Maybe next time, nice thought though.

I just listened to Johhny Winter And,
about 4-5 times while driving 2000 km
to Malaysia and back this week.

Long, long drive,
but I'm Still Alive And Well... Image

I was wondering which amps he used,
but I suspected Twins.
I saw them back when,
but had forgotten the pyramids.

One of my favorite bands from that era.
JW just cranked! and Derringer got in his licks too.
