another dual purpose amp

Post by Jim Peters »

Another guitar steel gig this weekend. I bought a Carvin SX100c, a 100 watt, 1 12" speaker amp, digital effects, light as a feather. I AB'd with my NV112, got a reasonably close tone to the 112 for steel.

The amp is 2 channels, each channel holds its effects settings. Sunday I do a 10 song set, 2 guitar, 8 on steel. Just not worth bringing 2 amps.
The key I think is the Carvin has active tone controls, and I can dial in the mids pretty good for steel, leaving the second channel dialed in for guitar.
Anyone else try this or the SX200 for steel? JP

You might try doing a search on the Forum. I recall several discussions in the past about Carvin SX series amps.

I bought a Carvin SX200C, and tried it with my Mullen. I found it had way too much treble and presence to suit me. I tried a 3khz crossover network between the amp and the speakers, and that really tamed the highs, but added a few pounds to the amp and wasn't elegant enough of a solution for my taste. So I bought a set of these for $25.00 and put them in the effects loop..... even better, and requires no permanent mod to the amp. I am perfectly happy with the amp now. The amp's original frequency response went up to 7 or 8 khz which was just too much.
