A - B Box

Post by Jeremy Steele »

I've been playing steel and guitar through the same amp recently, and I wanted to ask if anyone could recommend a way to leave them both plugged in and choose between them (with a footswitch or pedal, maybe). The amp in question is a Session 400 so I don't have the option of using two channels. Thanks in advance for any help.

I use the Startouch A/B/Y pedal for switching between guitars,- solid and noisefree.

Jeremy,,
I use a DOD 270 A-B box with no problems. They are cheap enough if ya don't like it you're not out to much, but I'm well satisfied with my set up.

I also use a Sessions 400, with my effects board through one of the E/F loops, so I still have my effects options on which ever instrument I'm using at the time.

I have been using a MORLEY, which costs I think $50 at the local Guitar Center.

It is passive..but does also have LEDS which require a 9V Battery.

The LEDS take the guess work out of which mode the pedal is in..

I have no negative issues to rport of this little device..works just fine.

Hey Jeremy,
Here's your chance to try your "d.i.y. "electronic skills". Go to an electronics supply house & pick up a small chassis,a dpdt foot switch,& 3 mono, open circuit,1/4 inch jacks,& "d.i.y." Very easy.
All you need is a soldering iron, some sheilded (guitar) wire,& an electric drill w/ bits.

I had a closer look at the Boss pedal Joey posted,- one of its huge advantages is that it has volume controls for each channel.
Very handy since different instruments often has different output levels...

I use this one, also works as a looper. You can use it passive, or plug in 9 volts to it and have LED indicators.

Well, maybe the Morley I had was just a bad one, but it was definitely a tone sucker. Noticeable degradation in the sound by running just through the box. Lehle makes nice switchers but they're pricey. The Keeley looks like a good choice.

Hey Jer:
I use this setup in my church. I play steel and acoustic guitar when called for. I made a switch similar to the one Shephen described. It cost about $10.00 and I have used it for 10 years with no noise or any problems. If you want a diagram as to how to set it up, I will be glad to draw it for you. Call me if you want help. 678-642-1801

My volume pedal works with both sides of my A-B box, so different out put levels isn't a problem for me.

I use the Boss LS-2 also. Since it does have seperate gain controls, it's pretty easy to also run some guitar only effects (compressors/overdrives etc) on the "B" side if you want. It kinda functions as a "matchbox" for the steel too. It's a multifunction box that you have to use a dummy plug in the lower right hand input to get it into A/B mode. I don't know whether it meets the most critical audiophile criteria, but it works great for my purposes.
[This message was edited by Rick Schmidt on 11 April 2006 at 07:43 PM.]

I play steel and telecaster through my Evans Fet 500 Lv. I use a Boss AB-2 pedal. Really cheap and just runs on 2 tiny batteries. Lights up to show which instrument your are on. Very light foot swich operates it.
