Barber Electronics Floor FX

Post by Buck Dilly »

I recently got a Barber Silver LTD. THis unit is a gentle overdrive that really sounds amazing. This is not a super hot unit, it is more like gently overdriving whatever amp you plug it into. I can't say enough about this unit. I used in the studio last night, and it was perfect. I feel it is most suited for overdriven rhythm stuff, but burns pretty well on solos. Very Quiet too. Blues fans will love it. Does anyone else use any Barber FX? I am considering replacing my Dynacomp with their compressor (Tone Press).

Barber makes great pedals. I also have the Silver LTD and it's the only pedal I use besides a tuner. All of his stuff is top notch and very affordable for the working musician.

I ordered the Tone Press Compressor this week. It has phase compensated true bypass while effect is on, in order to maintain attack. By the way I tried the LTD on my pedal steel and it doesn't sound so hot, but it rips on the lap steels and any guitars.

The Tone Press is one of my favorite compressors, but don't expect it to behave like your Dynacomp. It is not as squashy, and will tend to have better fidelity.

Barber makes very useable effects, their overdrives in particular are exactly what the doctor ordered if you want shimmery, subtle and expressive tone instead of over the top grind.

I will not completely replace the Dynacomp but use as A-B with it.
[This message was edited by Buck Dilly on 01 April 2006 at 05:01 AM.]

Lately this has been my main overdrive of choice:

Image

It's reminiscent of the TS-808 types, but without the nasty mid hump. I just turn it up and drive things from the Fender's volume and tone controls (IMO something EVERY steel should have!)

Heard Jorge quit Line 6 is going back in to production - bad news if you're a collector, great news if you like to PLAY his pedals.

Buck, I just got my new Barber Silver LTD overdrive pedal. Man, you're right. It's about the best thing I've heard. Very natural, low gain overdrive. I'm very impressed. What's also cool is that it's built as good as any high end boutique pedal, but they're not asking stupid high prices. It was about $120 new. Real good guts all around, good switch, good pots, good resistors, good caps, good construction, no slave labor, blah blah blah. So another serious thumbs up for the Barber Silver LTD.

HEy Brad,
How do the Barber Electronics compare to say the VooDoo labs stuff? I really like the VooDoo Lab Super Fuzz but am looking for an overdrive pedal to add to the ol arsenal.

Larry, I like the Voodoo Labs stuff too. I've got a Superfuzz and a Sparkle Drive. I'd have to say that this Barber stuff is in a league above the Voodoo stuff. The build quality and parts quality is a bit better. There's more attention to component selection and the build mentality is more of a handmade thing where the Voodoo stuff is built a little more assembly line style. But really what matters is tone. This Barber LTD just has a great sound to it. I haven't heard the VooDoo Overdrive, just the Superfuzz and the Sparkle Drive which is like a good TubeScreamer with a blend control that mixes a clean signal with it. The Barber LTD is a fuller and more natural sound and feels more fun to play thru. You don't lose any guitar tone with it. I'm just totally impressed. All the reports were accurate.

Boss Overdrives are good but not even close to the Barber. I also like the Fulldrive II. THe Fulldrive seems good for all instruments. The LTD doesn't cut it on my Push Pull.

Gary, on pedal steel guitar you'd probably prefer that Boss Blues Driver. The Barber LTD pedal really shines on 6-string. I'll mess around with it some more on steel and see if I change my mind.
