lexicon LXP-1...hum problem

Post by Gerald Pierce »

I can buy one of these units for 35 bucks, but it has a hum when you turn up the input knob on it past about halfway, but otherwise sounded pretty nice. I tried it with a 6-string guitar, and wasn't using may own amp (mine is a peavey nashville-112). I'm wondering if it might be worth using even if I am losing some of the amp gain. It's a made-in-China unit (dang it), if that makes any difference.
Whatcha think?
Thanks! G.P.

Depending on how it was hooked up it may just be "ground loop hum" and if that is what it is, there is nothing wrong with the Lex.

One other issue, if the Lex is being used with a standard "instrument" level it may just be because of the low level and how high you must turn it up to get any signal. The rack type Lexicons are designed for "Line level" which is a much higher signal level.

Thanks, Jack. That might be the problem. I was playing a Fender squire strat through it and it was not wired through the effects loop.
However, I did set the knob on the back to "instrument" when I tried it. I'll go back and try it the other way and see what happens.

If it's got an "instrument" switch then it is probably made for the low instrument level.

But, I'd still check for ground loop hum problems.

This must be a used unit.

Does it run off of a "wall wart"?

If so, make sure that it's the right type (AC versus DC), and make sure that the wart itself is not defective.

Also, make sure that the cords you used were good.

The wall wart is a lexicon, made to work with this unit. I bought it earlier today, but haven't tried it yet with my amp and guitar.

Thanks for all the input!

Gerald,
FWIW, I have been using an LXP-1 for a few years, and have never been able to set the input knob past 12 o'clock without the red light coming on (you will hear an undesireable distorion when the red light comes on).
My reccomendation is to run the input knob between 9-11 o'clock, and adjust the output knob accordingly (I typically run it around 1-3 o'clock).
I like the reverb type selection at 6 o'clock, and run both decay and delay in the 12-3 o'clock range.
Also, I just looked at my LXP-1 and it was "Assembled in Hong Kong", and it does not have any switch or button for Instrument/Line level.
Hope this helps,
Pete B.

Thanks for the setting info, Peter.
You're right about the lack of a line/instrument adjustment on the unit (I also tried an MPX-100 and another unit made by "Audio Centron" while I was at the music store). One of those 2 units had a line/instrument knob on it...can't remember which one....on second thought, I might have dreamed it.
I'll try the settings you suggested and go from there.
Thanks to all!
