Digital Effects Software

Post by Paddy Long »

Does anybody know of any software programs out there which would provide a digital effects processor via software ??-- IE: do it all from the laptop instead of using a bunch of stomps or a rackmount processor ?? It would be very cool to be able to dial up any effect you want on a s/w program -- which could be updated with periodic downloads etc. then just feed to it your amp, or sound desk as required.

Hi Paddy, you actually have several choices such as "native instruments guitar rig" line 6 makes software effects in conjunction with a small usb interface with line 6 you pretty much have to use their interface but with native you can just buy the software and use your own sound card as an interface.

The cheapest route I think is line 6 guitar riff works or the tone works. Now native also sells a package with a usb floor pedal sound card that interfaces with their software.

Personally I have native without their interface and it works just fine although there is just a hint of latency say around 4 to 8 ms and it's hardly noticable. Their amp modeling is insanely accurate and it's all set up just like virtual stomp boxes and you drag and drop them where you want them.

B0B just got line 6 tone works try seeing how he likes his but like I say you have to buy their usb interface but you would still take the laptop to the gig. The sw they use is exactly like theor pod hardware units so if you like the pods you'll like the software version some say it's even a little cleaner and fatter.

There have been several threads about using software effects just do a search for it. One of our members even set up a virtual rig and I believe he used it live and took pics for us to see how it looked.

Good luck and let us know what you decide to go with.

Thanks Bob - I do remember reading something about this and thought it was a great idea, and I see B0b has got a thread up about the POD offering so I will check that out.
