Another ? for Mike Brown

Post by Allen Peterson »

Mike,

My early 1980s Nashville 400 cuts out. I will be playing and then the sound stops. If I tap on the cabinet lightly the sound resumes. It only does this every once in a while. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Thank goodness it's not something electronic, this is a mechanical problem.

Allen, you might try spraying the Phone Jacks on your Amp.....there are some input jacks that have contacts that are "made" when not in use and can cause the very problem you are describing. Sometimes you can insert and remove a male jack several times in all your inputs and that will correct the problem. Of course it may be something else, but I would try that first.

Thanks for asking. When the problem occurs, the first thing that I would do is to use a shielded instrument cable and insert it be from the PRE EQ SEND and PRE EQ RETURN jacks on the front panel. The return jack is of the switching type and may not be switching properly. This will eliminate the possibility of a faulty return jack.

If this doesn't take care of the problem, then try the same thing with the PRE AMP OUT and POWER AMP IN jacks on the rear panel as the power amp in is also a switching type of jack.

As a matter of fact, this is basically what Roger Kelly is referring to.

If you need further assistance, contact me at 1-877-732-8391, ext. 1180 and I will be glad to assist.

Well, I used this amp Saturday night and had nothing but problems. It started cutting out in the first song. No amount of fiddling with the input jacks helped. It was just not reliable at all. By the third song I ended up using my Nash 112 for both six string and steel, and I relied on it the rest of the night. The Nash 112 came though like a charm I might add. I have had this amp (the Nash 400) into the shop locally on two occasions and they can find nothing wrong with it. I guess I will use it for a door stop from now on. That's about all it's good for.

Your best option for repair is to send it to Peavey. There's no ned to turn it into a "dust collector".

Thanks Mike. I'll try to get it in the mail tomorrow or Thursday. I think there must be something more than just the jacks wrong with this amp. One of the previous repairmen actually burnished the jacks to no avail.

What's the best way to ship this amplifier chassis to you? UPS?
