low volume on 1 side of TubeFex

Post by Bob Martin »

Hi has anyone had any experience with one side of the stereo unbalanced output being quite a bit lower than the other side.

I just got a TubeFex and I thought it sounded a little one sided so I did some tests thru my board and recorder and the right side is about 1/3 lower than the other side.

I wonder if this is any cause for concern as in will it get worse then finally go completely out or is it just normal thing.

I did tests with and without effects and all ended up conclusive of the lower volume on the right output. Now I can compensate for this deficit by boosting the right output on the mixer but if it is going to die completely well I need to get it fixed.

Let me know what you guys think and we'll see if we can come up with a solution. Thanks

Have you tried it with and without the Tube preamp "TB"?

Without the tube preamp is basically like a Profex II, just the "digital" preamp. See if it has different levels that way.

Hey Jack, thanks a bunch for the prompt reply but yeah I already tried it that way too. Oh and by the way I just love this thing I have used just about every effect known to man but there's something about this tube preamp being directly connected to the digital section that really sounds good to me.

The funny thing about the TubeFex is as you already know I have a TransFex Pro 2-12 and the TTF in it sounds completely different. You might have read where I said that I couldn't even use the reverb in the TTF so I expected the reverb in this TubeFex to be the same but to my surprise the reverb in the TubeFex is quite nice and usable even in the studio.

Now there are either 3 things happening here. Either there is something wrong with my TTF in my TransFex pro or it combined with the amp just makes the reverb sound very grainy and unusable even in a live situation. Or the real 12ax7's sweeten the sound enough feeding the reverb that it makes it sound better. I don't think that is it either because the reverb even sounds good on the presets that don't use the TB in the chain so something funny is going on :-)

I'm wondering if I have a bad TTF in my Transfex pro or if vs 1.5 sounds better than the version in my TransFex.

Anyway thanks again for the reply Jack.

Have you done a "Factory Reset" in the TT Fex? That seems to cure a lot of flakey problems. That will wipe out your user programs, however.

No I haven't done that yet but I will but before I do that I want to get a midi sysex app so that I can backup all of the presets there are some very nice ones on it. So I guess I should start looking for a midi sysex app that will work for the TubeFex. I'll start doing a search later today. I haven't read the manual yet but I'm sure I can do a preset dump thru a sysex midi dump I'll just have to find an app that will work with the Tubefex. Maybe someone has written one at peavey. thanks again Jack.

I would suspect deeper problems than a reset might solve. Any sign of battery leakage? If so, clean it up ASAP with a Q-tip and denatured alcohol, isopropal alcohol or acetone (fingernail polish remover). If you are still having trouble then I would send it to Peavey, the real experts with these units! Due the use of surface mount technology, I do not work on Tubefex or Transtubefex units.
